ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Zn-based coatings are extensively used for the protection of steel structures. Efforts toward further enhancement in the corrosion resistance performance of Zn coatings are therefore an area of continued interest. In this work, Zn-graphene oxide (Zn-GO) composite coatings containing different volume fractions of GO were electrodeposited on mild steel substrates using an electrolyte bath with different concentrations of dispersed graphene oxide. The electrodeposition parameters used yielded compact and crack-free morphology for all the coatings. Incorporation of GO led to a refinement of the Zn crystallites in the coating matrix. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements clearly showed that all the Zn-GO composite coatings exhibited higher corrosion resistance performance when compared to the pristine Zn coatings, and further, the corrosion rate decreased with the increase in the volume fraction of the GO in the composite coatings.

ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Inhibitor-loaded ZnAlCe layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocontainers were prepared through the co-precipitation method. Vanadate and molybdate were used as guest inhibitors intercalating in the interlayer galleries of ZnAlCe-LDHs. The samples were characterized in terms of morphology, structure, and release behavior by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) techniques. To investigate inhibition behavior, the LDHs particles were embedded in a hybrid sol–gel (SiO x /ZrO x ) layer on aluminum alloy 2024 measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The EIS results show that the sol–gel coating with inhibitor-loaded ZnAlCe-LDH particles exhibits high corrosion resistance due to the active inhibition by the dissolution of ZnAlCe-LDHs and inhibitor anions and the exchange behavior of LDHs. Compared with the addition of ZnAlCe-MoO4-LDHs, the coating embedded with ZnAlCe-V2O7-LDHs exhibited better anticorrosion abilities and provided effective protection after a long immersion time. Argent

ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The surface activity of hot-dip galvanized steel was evaluated after alkaline cleaning by exposing the cleaned specimens in humid supercritical carbon dioxide, followed by extraction and quantification of the formed corrosion products. Different free alkalinities of the cleaning bath were studied to obtain information on the evolution of zinc surface activity at different levels of surface etching. Surface reactivity of uncleaned galvanized steel is restricted and local, with major contributions from grain boundaries and intermetallic particles. Formation of zinc corrosion products took place in uncleaned samples exclusively on and around these sites. Al2O3 removal by alkaline cleaning gradually increased the surface activity. The major increase in surface activity was achieved when increasing the free alkalinity from 0.5 to 4.0 mEq/L, which was shown by formation of zinc corrosion products within zinc grains. The surface activity was confirmed by applying a titanium hexafluoride pretreatment on the cleaned panels and measuring the lateral microscale uniformity of the formed layer. The uniformity increased when larger areas of galvanized steel became activated by alkaline cleaning. Reactivity of zinc is rather difficult to quantify when setting up an industrial cleaning sequence for galvanized steel. Controlled exposure of cleaned samples in humid supercritical carbon dioxide, followed by quantification of oxidized zinc, provides a straightforward method to evaluate zinc reactivity.
