Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Hydroxyl terminated straight chain polyester resins of high molecular weight ranging from 3000 to 10000, were prepared and evaluated. The coil coating compositions based on these polyester resins were found to have excellent flexibility (OT bend test), scratch hardness (6H) and excellent water, salt water, acid, alkali, solvent and corrosion resistance. The polyester resin of 10000 molecular weight was found to give best results. The curing time of one minute was achieved at stoving temperature of 250°C with 0.4% melamine as curing agent. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Resins were prepared by fortifying urea formaldehyde with tannins of Uncaria gambier and Acacia catechu separately upto 30% at room temperature. Adhesive formulations and gluing conditions were examined by preparing laboratory 3-ply sal boards (53.34cm x 53.34cm). In order to study the effect of fortification of Urea formaldehyde with both the tannins, the gluing results obtained were analyzed and it was revealed that the glue shear strength of the plywood cannot only meet the requirements of the Indian Standards IS: 303-1989, for moisture resistance grade plywood, but also better than control. Hence both the tannins would be desirable fortifiers for urea formaldehyde resin as reducing the cost of the glue without affecting the bond quality of Moisture Resistance (MR) grade plywood. The molar ratios taken with respect to cardanol to formaldehyde were 1:0.6, 1:0.7, 1:0.8 and 1:0.9. These resins were characterized by I.R. spectroscopy for determining respective functional groups in the resin structure, and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) was used to determine the molecular weights of the prepared novolac resins. These resins were found to possess ortho-ortho and ortho-para linkages. The curing characteristics of the resins showed that the resin prepared with molar ratio 1:0.8 has good curing characteristics.
