Sciure de bois Index. décimale : 620.197 Matériaux fibreux d'origine végétale et animale : textiles, papier Résumé : This research compares the physical and thermal characteristics of three kinds of wood sawdust applied to bio-composites filler. Doping levels were systematically varied at weight percentages of 0.5%, 1%, 3%, and 5%. Comprehensive analyses, including tensile strength, strain, hardness, structural, and morphological evaluations, were conducted. The structural transformation of PMMA was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, revealing a cubic phase post-doping. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images elucidated a range of crystalline sizes upon nanoparticle integration. Mechanical property assessments indicated a significant enhancement in tensile strength, which escalated from 5.45 MPa in the undoped matrix to 14.85 MPa at the highest doping concentration. However, the distribution of stress within the PMMA:(Bi2O3:Fe2O3) composites was observed to be non-uniform. Furthermore, the impact strength demonstrated a marked increase in the specimens containing 0.5% and 1% wt. of (Bi2O3:Fe2O3), suggesting an optimal doping threshold for impact resistance. Shore D hardness measurements also reflected this trend of improvement, with values rising from 71.6 in the pure PMMA to 89 in the composites as the doping ratio increased. Collectively, these findings underscore the potential of (Bi2O3:Fe2O3) nanoparticles to fortify PMMA matrices, offering promising avenues for the development of advanced materials with tailored properties for protective applications against ionizing radiation. Various proportions of (0, 15, 30, 45, and 60) wt.% of metakaolin were intrinsically mixed with epoxy to invistigate their physical properties represented by moisture absorption. Tensile test was employed to determine their mechanical properties such as ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, modulus of elasticity, as well as compressive strength, flexural strength and Vickers hardness test which was used to specify hardness number. The obtained experimental results showed improvement in the modulus of elasticity, compressive strength, and hardness with the addition of metakaolin. In contrast, the yield and tensile strength of the composite specimens which decrease with the increase in metakaolin content. Also, absorption of moisture test at different immersion times was carried out with different filler loadings of the prepared composite. The results of the test showed that a decreasing in water uptake for specimens with higher metakaolin content. From optical surface investigation using an optical microscope, it was found a reduction in porosity with an increase in the concentration of metakaolin and the specimen with weight percent of 60% is the highest homogeneity and less porosity and voids as compared to the other specimens. The prepared composite may find potential practical applications such as anti-corrosion coating, automotive components and medical devices. In that sense, it is the first initiative in the technical literature and brings fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology, recycled filament-based products, and artificial neural network strategies together to estimate the friction coefficient and volume loss outcomes. In the experimental stage, to provide the required data for five different neural algorithms, dry-sliding wear tests, and hardness measurements were conducted. As FDM printing variables, layer thickness (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 mm), infill rate (40, 70, and 100 %), and building direction (vertical, and horizontal) were selected. The obtained results pointed out that vertically built samples usually had lower wear resistance than the horizontally built samples. This case can be clarified with the initially measured hardness levels of horizontally built samples and optical microscopic analyses. Besides, the Levenberg Marquard (LM) algorithm was the best option to foresee the wear outputs compared to other approaches. Considering all error levels in this paper, the offered results by neural networks are notably acceptable for the real industrial usage of material, mechanical, and manufacturing engineering areas. Three different fiber sizes (180–250 µm, 250–500 µm, and 700–1000 µm) were used to prepare composites with varying fiber loadings of 10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, and 30 wt.%. The fabricated composites were cut to standard dimensions, and tension tests, impact tests, and water absorption tests were performed. Reproducible results were obtained, revealing that using fibers of smaller diameter (180–250 µm) increased the tensile strength of the composite by 20 % compared to composites with larger diameter fibers (700–1000 µm), while the tensile modulus showed a 22 % enhancement with decreasing fiber diameter. Composites with larger diameter fibers exhibited more defects (voids and matrix detachment), as revealed by SEM analysis of fractured surfaces. The impact strength of composites with a diameter size of 700–1000 µm increased by 33 % compared to composites reinforced with the smallest fiber diameter. Water absorption of the composites was also studied by long-term immersion in water, showing that water intake was high initially, reaching a saturation point after a certain time interval. The absorbed water values indicated that composites with the smallest diameter (180–250 µm) showed maximum water intake due to the creation of more water intake sites (increased interfacial area), while composites with the largest diameter fibers (700–1000 µm) exhibited the least water absorption as the interaction region between fibers and matrix was reduced. This study investigates the mechanical properties and environmental sustainability of adobe bricks reinforced with date palm waste (DPW) and a small percentage of cement. Adobe bricks were stabilized using 7% cement by weight and varying proportions of DPW (0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% by weight), followed by curing under two distinct conditions: moist storage (MS) and open-air (AF). It was observed that bricks cured under MS conditions significantly outperformed those cured in AF, evidenced by a 47.05% reduction in capillary absorption coefficient compared to the reference brick. Despite a decrease in compressive strength due to DPW incorporation, the bricks exhibited increases in capillary and total absorption while still satisfying earth construction standards. Notably, flexural strength improved by 41.66% under MS curing. Enhanced erosion and abrasion resistance, as well as improved performance throughout wetting/drying cycles, were also recorded. These enhancements underscore the potential of DPW as a renewable additive in the formulation of adobe bricks for ecological and durable housing. The study not only proposes a novel use for date palm byproducts but also contributes to the advancement of environmentally-friendly construction methodologies. Composites -- Propriétés mécaniquesContraintes (mécanique)Déformations (mécanique)Eléments finis, Méthode desEpoxydesPlaquettes Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Defects, such as cell wall thickness variations, significantly influence cellular materials' mechanical characteristics. For instance, during a compression test in deformation mode, the crush bands are initiated at cells with a thinner wall thickness. This paper examines the effect of boundary irregularity on the nonlinear elastoplastic mechanical behavior of platelet-reinforced composite materials. Two types of stochastic (random distribution) platelets: with rounded corners and with sharp corners are generated using the Voronoi tessellation method. To better compare the effect of boundary irregularity, the composites are analyzed for three different volume fractions. The microstructure of the composite studied consists of isotropic and linear elastic platelets embedded in a perfectly plastic elastic matrix. Nonlinear numerical simulation of the tensile test was carried out using FE Zebulon software. The results show that the composites exhibit bilinear stress-strain behavior, consisting of two lines representing, respectively, the linear behavior (whose slope is Young's modulus) and the plastic behavior (whose slope is the strain hardening modulus). The effective Young's modulus, yield strength, and tangent modulus of the composites are calculated and compared in terms of the shape and volume fraction of the platelets. In the elastic zone, the results indicate that the curves of the two types of stochastic platelets overlap, giving very close results for Young's modulus. In the plastic zone, the effect of platelet irregularity is noticeable. It has been found that the platelets with rounded corners have a higher tangent modulus than those with sharp corners. This deference can improve the composite's ability to withstand more deformation under high loads, unlike platelets with sharp edges. In order to avoid surface defects by too low or too high melt front velocities along the flow path, profiling of the injection velocity can be necessary. Therefore, in previous work, a methodical approach has been developed, which calculates an injection velocity profile that can be set directly at the injection moulding machine, in order to gain a constant melt front velocity along the flow path. Using the existing approach, two different part geometries are injection moulded with an injection velocity profile from two different materials. The resulting microscopic and macroscopic part properties are evaluated and compared with the samples produced at a constant injection velocity. By keeping the melt front velocity constant, the surface quality can be specifically influenced, while other properties are hardly affected by profiling the injection velocity. Renfort minéralRenforts (matériaux)Usure (matériaux) Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The current study investigated the potential application of agricultural waste chicken eggshell (CES) as a reinforcement in composites made of poly (lactic acid) (PLA). With the use of twin extruder and injection molding machine, polymer composites have been developed. The performance of the composites was assessed with respect to its mechanical, thermal, and wear properties. It was shown that the increase in eggshell content led to the increase in void content and water absorption. Despite the increase in void content, the mechanical properties, in particular, micro-hardness, tensile strength and flexural strength were significantly improved. Conversely, when the eggshell content increased from 0 to 30 wt%, the impact strength was decreased. A slight decrease in fracture toughness was observed. Thermal properties, such as thermal stability and thermal degradation temperature, were improved with an increase in eggshell content. PLA, PLA-CES-10, PLA-CES-20, and PLA-CES-30 composites exhibited increase in erosion rate by 13.8 %, 10 %, 9 %, and 6 %, respectively, when the impact velocity was increased from 30 m/s to 50 m/s. Data were analyzed statistically with one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey’s HSD test (α < 0.05). Overall, PLA/eggshell based polymer composites performed exceptionally well, in addition to their environmental benefits, pollution control, waste utilization, and reduced production cost. However, their performance falls short when compared to traditional materials, necessitating research focused on enhancing the strength of natural composites. The limited attention given by researchers to Terminalia arjuna fiber, a natural fiber, prompted an exploration to unveil novel scientific insights into Terminalia arjuna fiber-based composites. This study involved the creation of a natural composite through the hand layup process, combining Terminalia arjuna fiber and epoxy resin. Additionally, nanofiller like silica (SiO2) were introduced as reinforcing agents. Various materials were fabricated for different weight percentages of fiber and particles. The assessment covered mechanical and water absorption characteristics. The composite composed of epoxy with 30 wt% Terminalia arjuna and 2 wt% SiO2 showcased excellent mechanical properties, including high tensile strength (74 MPa), flexural strength (98 MPa), impact resistance (6.6 kJ/m2), and hardness (90 shore-d). Furthermore, it demonstrated minimal water absorption (18.4 % after 10 days). This research suggests that the epoxy/Terminalia arjuna/2 wt% SiO2 composite could be a preferred choice for industrial applications due to its outstanding performance. This concrete incorporates recovered materials, specifically recycled fines from waste concrete as fillers and date palm waste as fibers, to address the urgent need for sustainable construction materials. Utilizing a 23 full factorial experimental design, this investigation rigorously examined the impact of three critical parameters: fiber percentage (FP), recycled filler percentage (RFP), and fiber length (FL), on the physico-mechanical properties of the resulting sand concrete. The analysis, conducted with the statistical software JMP Trial 16, revealed divergent effects of these variables on the material's properties. It was observed that while both fiber length (FL) and fiber content (FP) exert a significant influence on the concrete's characteristics, the proportion of recycled fillers (RFP) integrated into the mixture displayed a negligible effect. Notably, the incorporation of recycled fillers and fibers into sand concrete significantly enhanced its flexural strength. Comparisons with control sand concrete demonstrated a substantial increase in strength, with improvements of up to 19.5%. This exploration not only contributes to the body of knowledge on sustainable building materials but also underscores the potential of utilizing agricultural and construction waste to enhance the performance of concrete. The findings suggest that strategic incorporation of waste-derived fibers and fillers could play a pivotal role in the development of stronger, more environmentally friendly construction materials. This synergistic combination aims to enhance the foam’s antibacterial properties while investigating its impact on mechanical strength. Nanoparticles and prepared nanopolymer were characterized by different methods like XRD, TEM, SEM, and EDS. The mechanical characteristics and antibacterial properties of prepared polyurethane composites were investigated in the presence of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. A much higher level than reported in the literature was found for PU films filled with ZnO nanorods. Incorporating nanoparticles into polyurethane nanocomposites has been demonstrated to significantly improve polyurethane’s antibacterial properties. The results revealed that ZnO/PU antibacterial efficiency decreased with increasing ZnO nanofiller content, while AgNPs@ZnO/PU composite antibacterial efficiency increased with increasing AgNPs@ZnO nanofiller content. Also, the weak coordinate bond between ZnO and Ag in the PU chain extender was demonstrated. Increasing the ZnO content to 1.4 wt% resulted in greater Young’s modulus and tensile strength, which increased when the ZnO content was increased further. Such a dual-functional enhancement holds promise for applications requiring both antimicrobial efficacy and mechanical integrity. The rheological and mechanical properties of polypropylene/kaolin composites have been evaluated at various concentrations of untreated and/or treated kaolin. It was shown that the melt flow index (MFI) varies visibly but slightly compared to that of the matrix with increasing kaolin content. Furthermore, when the kaolin loading is enhanced, the apparent shear viscosity (ηapp) of the composites increases compared to the matrix and decreases with the increase in the shear rate (γapp). Also, while the shear stress (τapp) is reduced, the flow curve shifts upwards with increasing the kaolin concentration. The systems obeyed the power-law model in shear stress-shear rate variations and were shear thinning as power-law index (n) values increased with kaolin content. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the obtained composites were significantly affected by the dispersion of the filler into the matrix and by the weak interactions at the interface PP/kaolinite. SEM micrographs show a poor dispersion of the nanoclay within the polypropylene matrix and the formation of agglomerates with different sizes. The mechanical attributes scrutinized include hardness, impact resistance, compressive and tensile strengths, and flexural robustness. The fabrication process entailed manual molding techniques to yield homogenized composite samples. It was observed that the integration of carbon fibers markedly augmented the composite's mechanical performance. Specifically, the carbon fiber-reinforced specimens demonstrated a maximum hardness of 85.4 N/mm2, an impact strength cresting at 6.27 KJ/m2, a compressive strength peaking at 24.5 MPa, a tensile strength apex of 20 MPa, and a superior bending strength of 39.09 MPa. Conversely, the incorporation of CuO particles yielded mixed outcomes. While there was a notable increment in hardness strength to 83.5 N/mm2 and a modest rise in impact strength to 0.70 KJ/m2, a diminution was witnessed in compressive, tensile, and bending strengths, which dwindled to 8.33 MPa, 5.07 MPa, and 9.54 MPa, respectively. The findings underscore the efficacy of carbon fiber reinforcements in significantly bolstering the structural integrity of composite materials destined for prosthetic applications, outperforming the enhancements provided by CuO particles. This research underscores the potential for carbon fiber to act as a pivotal reinforcement agent in the development of high-performance prosthetic limbs, providing a robust framework for future material innovation. The study's implications extend to the design of lightweight, durable prosthetic components that can endure the multifaceted demands placed on them during use. Future investigations could pivot towards optimizing fiber-matrix interfaces and exploring hybrid reinforcement strategies to further push the boundaries of prosthetic material capabilities. The fibers were subsequently analyzed for their structural, thermal stability, microstructural, and mechanical properties using techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, micro-infrared imaging, thermogravimetric analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy, and fiber strength testing. The limitations of phenolic resins, including high brittleness, poor toughness, and low elongation at break, restrict their potential applications, necessitating modifications to broaden their utility. Research findings indicate that modifying EDA induces a ring-opening reaction of epoxy groups, thereby enhancing the resin’s structure and improving the thermal stability and mechanical properties of fibers. The thermal stability and mechanical strength of the fibers were optimized at an EDA concentration of 2.0 wt% and curing time of 30 min, resulting in a tensile strength of 105 MPa and an elongation at break of 27.6 %. Indeed, the probability of a massive climate change, capable of threatening the planet’s stability, is high if the current trend continues. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the main thermal insulation materials dominating the current market as well as their origins, strengths, and weaknesses. Additionally, the study identifies the criteria that make an insulator ideal and may be competitive in the near future as well as the direction of research in order to develop advanced materials. The results of the consulted studies reveal that there is no agreement on an ideal insulator that gather all the thermal insulation requirements. Each of the categories has its own weaknesses that should be addressed in the future to overcome. As well, super-insulators remain one of the most promising materials in this market, but they require more research in order to overcome some of the weaknesses that limit their insertion and production on a large scale. Ecological materials produced from natural fibers are currently far from being the candidates that can compete with super-insulators. Thus, considerable efforts are required to make these natural fibers able to dominate the construction market. Similarly, the comparison of the thermal conductivity of the four categories confirms that super-insulators are the most effective in reducing heat transfer through walls and through thinner layers as well. Finally, in addition to the ecological aspect, the thermo-physical and mechanical properties, and so on, the insulating materials must guarantee certain percentages of acoustic insulation. Two groups of bio-composites mixed in solid state and melt extrusion state were developed by the standard thermo compression molding process. For each group of bio-composites developed, the mass percentage of ASP was varied from 5 % to 40 %. Tensile and friction tests and micro structural analyzes were carried out. The main results show that the addition of ASP particles: decreases the maximum tensile stress and increases the rigidity of the two types of bio-composites produced. A significant improvement was observed in terms of maximum stress and Young’s modulus of the bio-composites mixed in the molten state compared to those mixed in the solid state. Microscopic observations concluded that the melt-blended ASPs were better covered by the LLDPE matrix and the dispersion was successfully achieved. Friction tests have shown an improvement in tribological performance thanks to the addition of an optimal percentage of ASP equal to 20 % in the case of bio-composites mixed in the molten state. From this research work, it can be concluded that the LLDPE/ASP homogenization method influences the mechanical and tribological properties of bio-composites. In pursuit of materials that contribute to the reduction of power consumption and carbon emissions, the tribological properties of composites in automotive, aerospace, and power generation applications have become increasingly critical. This research examines the tribology of a novel Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) composite, synthesized through an innovative solvent-assisted fluidization process. This technique involved swelling polymer pellets in acetone, followed by reinforcement with dual additives, Titanium Dioxide and Tungsten (TiO2W), in varying weight percentages (2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%). Experimental analysis revealed that the incorporation of these additives enhanced the material's Shore D hardness, with a peak value of 78 achieved at a 5% reinforcement level. Tribological assessments conducted with a tribometer under a constant sliding velocity of 0.5 m/s and a normal load of 10 Newtons over a 500-meter distance indicated that the addition of 2.5% TiO2W to the ABS matrix resulted in the lowest mass wear rate (2×10-7 g/Nm) and a coefficient of friction (COF) of 0.191. These findings suggest that the strategic inclusion of TiO2W additives into ABS composites can significantly improve their wear resistance and hardness, which are essential for their performance in demanding environments. The research offers a foundation for the development of ABS-based materials with superior tribological properties for critical applications, potentially leading to enhanced energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
