Cuirs et peaux -- TeintureIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A number of dyestuffs of known chemical structure have been examined with a view to ascertaining whether there is any correlation between the chemical constitution of the dyestuff and the dyeing behaviour. There are indications that some correlation could exist and, for the dyestuffs examined, the quotient of the number of azo groups and sulpho groups appears to give a reasonable measure for the affinity and behaviour of the dyestuff. Tamis moléculairesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Since 1959, when cross-linked dextran gels were first prepared by Flodin and Porath, a whole new field of chromatography has become available based on differences in molecular size. The various methods and materials used for gel filtration are described and particular use is made of theoretical considerations to determine the factros which influence resolution during gel filtration. Affinity chromatography on porous media and the use of chemically modified sepharoses are briefly considered. Note de contenu : - Theoretical Considerations

Volumétrie (chimie analytique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Tanners who process pickled sheepskins which have benn stored for a long time have probaly noticed taht sometimes the pelts are liable to swell a great deal after having been returned to the pelts state (for example, after being depickled to pH 7, and thoroughly washed).
The published literature covering the deterioration produced on the skin by the preserving pickle does not refer to this swelling. There are many papers which deal with the attacks of acids (without salt) on collagen, and others which treat the acid pretreatment of collagen in order to obtain gelatin. Some of them mention that this king of acidic attack has also been observed in the presence of common salt, with the consequent swelling at neutral pH. The conditions which produce this swelling have not been studied systematically as yet.
In this paper, variations of both swelling at neutral pH and the shrinkage temperature of the pelts (Spanish sheepskins after a conventional beamhouse process) are investigated as a result of the conditions of the previous pickle (NaCl in the bath: 6 and 12°/Bé; H2SO4: 1.3 and 9% on pelt weight; temp.: 20 and 40°C and time 0, 1, 6, 8 and 34 days).
It has been found that both the degree of swelling and the decrease of shrinkage temperature depend on the conditions of the previous pickle. Both increase when the pickle action has been more intense.
Furthermore, the effects of the acidic attack produced by a strong pickle are studied specifically on: (a) variations in the percentage of swelling and shrinkage temperature at different pH values; (b) titration curves; (c) the amount of chrome taken up by the skin in a conventional tanning; and (d) physical tests of the leather obtained, measured in the Lastrometer.
Accordind to the results, and relating them to the fidings of other authors, some theoretical aspects of the possible causes of this swelling are discussed.
In conclusion, a simple method to assist the sheepskin tanner is presented. This method aids in establishing the degree of deterioration of the skins caused by the combined action of the beamhouse process and the preserving pickle. The method does not require specialised personnel or instrumments.Note de contenu : - Fig. 1 : Precentage of swelling at neutral pH as a function of pickle and storage conditions

Pack tanning trials are reported that compare leather yield and quality from stack and drum cured hides. To eliminate yield deficiency and distribution of grease in the hair and the flesh, hides should be fleshed prior to drum salting, the temperature should not exceed 25°C during drumming (3h for calfskins ; 6h for hides) and the hides should be adequately spread out after curing. In New Zealand, six large plants use 4 rev/min. drums or mixers for curing hides and calfskins; 30% w/w salt, 0.5% w/w boric acid and 0.25% w/w naphthalene is the mixture used for each load. None of the variables affected the rate of colour change, over 45 days' storage at 0°C. Between-sample variability of colour remained constant during storage, was slightly reduced by a common rechroming and approximately halved by dyeing. Good correlation was found between colour differences in wet-blue leathers and shade variations in the dyed leathers. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Processing details - Colour measurement

Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Cuirs et peaux -- Teinture Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The colour of the leather is the most important factor for its acceptance to the customer. Leather has other important characteristics such as water vapour permeability which are difficult to demonstrate convincingly to the customer. Recent developments in dyeing have contributed considerably towards producing serviceable leather in anticipation of the changing demand of the customer. Constant efforts should be made in the future to develop dyes with improved fastness properties, in particular dry-cleaning and perspiration fastness. Developments in the manufacturing technique of leather with better hydrothermal resistance would contribute towards improvements in continuous through-put dyeing systems. All these would further improve the competitive position of leather against synthetic materials. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Collagen was treated with different sulphonyl chlorides and some of the physico-chemical properties of the modified collagen such as viscosity, dissolution temperature and polyacrylamide disc electrophoretic pattern were studied. The monofunctional sulphonyl chlorides increased the viscosity of the collagen solution, probably due to aggregation of molecules facilitated by hydrophobic bonds. However, the very high viscosity observed in the case of disulphonyl chlorides with collagen indicates that inter-molecular cross-links are formed with these reagents. From dissolution temperatures and polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic patterns, it is considered that disulphonyl chlorides can introduce intra- and inter-molecular cross-links in collagen under suitable conditions. ThermocinétiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The shrinkage kinetic of collagen was first used by Weirl to measure the activation enthalpy and entropy of the fibre-random coil transition of collagen.
The early results shown a relative simple kinetic, characterised by a single parameter, namely the half time of the process. Later on, a more sophisticated intepretation of the kinetic was suggested. The curves shown in these works are very simple.
The stability of collagen fibres is widely measured by means of the shrinkage temperature. This parameter is very easy to measure and, if the process is as simple as was described, it may well characterise the transition with enough accuracy. It is probable that on this account there have not been many new works published on shrinkage kinetic.Note de contenu : - Fig. 1 : Diagram of the apparatus

Cuirs et peaux -- TeintureIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The aim here is to help make better leather, in particular to be able to dye it better. The difficulties in dyeing can be attributed in part to the leather, in part to the dyes, and in part to the process itself. Relevant points about dyes and about the substrate are therefore first reviewed briefly, and then the process of dyeing is considered, stress being laid particularly on the need to standardise the process as far as possible. Standardising does not mean that ail leather should be the same, but that, when a particular type of leather is being produced, variations between batches and between individual pieces within batches are reduced as far as possible. (1974), 58, 88, for making standard segments of chrome tanned upper leather, has been modified by the introduction of selected variants. The subprocesses which have been varied are: (i) liming; (ii) staking and conditioning; (iii) retannage and fatliquoring. Control segments made by the unmodified standard process have been included as a part of each pack. In addition to measurements made during processing, the leathers produced have been assessed for their main mechanical properties, using both subjective and objective methods. The results show the exceptional reproducibility of the standard process itself and so enable the effects of the variants to be reliably assessed. The marked effect of increased duration of liming on subjective properties is not reflected in all the physical test results. The degree of staking employed (Mollisa) resulted in significant differences in subjective properties and in the stress/strain properties for low strains. The use of glutaraldehyde retannage and of a higher level of fatliquor produced significant differences in certain of the mechanical properties which were measured or assessed. Statistical analyses have been applied to the results of the factorial designs employed. Note de contenu : - The standard process and the leathers produced from it (Packs 1-5)

- Table 4 : Mean values of test results for leathers front packs 1 and 2 (standard process I), pack 3 (standard process I with delays in brine and chrome pile), packs 4 and 5 (standard process II). For tensile specimens AI, M4, P4 perpendicular to backbone, M2 parallel to backbone
- Table 5 : Standard process H, packs 4 and 5. Mean values and the confidence limits for packs and sub-packs of two or four segments. (mean ± A gives the confident limits)
- Table 6 : Overall average values (packs 1 to 9) of 72 segments for weight and area during processing. Area values for sub-processes prior to drying are compared (as %) with the original area, for drying and after estimates are used, correcting for trimming of one end. Weights are related to the appropriate stages at which material
was removed (original, lime splitting, shaving, end trimming)
