A large number of techniques is available for the preparation of organic membranes with configurations, structures and functions that are suitable for specific applications. The asymmetric membranes are prepared by coagulation of a polymer solution in a non-solvent, and are used for gas permeation, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and nanofiltration. For the two latter processes, composite membranes with an ultrathin active layer are obtained by interfacial polycondensation at the skin of an asymmetric membrane. Specific chemical groups are privileged in the structure of pervaporation and ionic membranes, which work by affinity. New techniques for the preparation of complex structures widened the innovation possibility in the design of membranes for industrial and medical applications. |
