Résumé : |
Over the las few years syntans have dramatically improved, almost unbeknownst to many in the tanning world. As a matter of fact, a lot of new syntans are more than just another formulation. There is often much research work behind them. The leading traditional research-oriented companies have been particularly active. Their aim was to fulfill new consumer trends toward lighter, better filled and longer-lasting serviceable types of leather articles. All this had to be taken into account, and not overlooking the fact that the tanner is faced with an increasing problem of raw material with more and more quality defects.
Therefore, one focus for the recent research work has been to study new and possible synergistic effects in the retanning area. The combination of different syntan types, as well as suitable influences of some specific catalysts, have been evaluated in order to improve the mechanical and physical properties of leather.
This paper discusses and illustrates how some well known polymer syntans can be and were improved, especially with regards to speed of penetration and better distribution within the leather. This work was done with the aim of helping to cover natural grain defects and improving serviceability. |
