UV-cured hybrid sol-gel coationgs for aeronautical and direct-to-metal (DTM) applications / N. Moreau in POLYMERS PAINT COLOUR JOURNAL - PPCJ, Vol. 204, N° 4595 (04/2014)

Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : DTM coatings aim to ensure corrosion protection, while providing UV stable and glossy films. Photopolymerisable hybrid sol-gel coatings have been found to meet these requirements. The high passive corrosion resistance relies on the hybrid sol-gel ability to form dense barriers to corrosion initiator penetration. A high adhesion property is also provided by the formation of stable covalent bonds between the coating and the metal substrate. Compared to conventional DTM coatings, photopolymerisation presents the a dvantages of a fast curing at room temperature using low energy consumption equipment. The developed UV-cured hybrid sol-gel coatings are chromate-free and applied as a thin mono-layer (25pm dry film thickness (dft)). They provide high corrosion resistance on many metallic substrates, such as aeronautical aluminium alloys and good adhesion on different substrates even composites.
In this study, a synthesized polymerizable quaternary ammonium salt (PQAS-18) was intercalated into inorganic sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) as an organic modifier via cationic exchange. Afterward, a novel organic–inorganic hybrid material was prepared through in situ UV-curing technology and combined with a polymer matrix based on polybutadiene dimethacrylate (PBDMA). PQAS-18 fixed the crosslinked network due to its double bond, thereby leading to firm bonding between the polymer matrix and organoclay; moreover, our study showed homogeneous dispersion of the lamellar structure in the polymer matrix. X-ray diffraction proved that the distance between Na-MMT layers increased, and water vapor transmission measurement showed that the moisture barrier property of cured hybrid film was remarkably improved. Already performance levels are comparable to those found on many commercial solvent based systems. There is every likelihood that these levels will be increased. Chemical costs are likely to be substantially less than with conventional spray finishing of solvent diluted lacquers. Savings on chemicals are greater than the increased capital investment necessary for the roller-coating equipment which we believe is an essential pre-requisite for the industrial application of UV-curing finishes by the leather industry.
