Titre : Twenty-first Procter memorial lecture Procter's text-book of tanning - 1885 : a retrospective review in the centennial year Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : R. L. Sykes, Auteur Année de publication : 1986 Article en page(s) : p. 1-10 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Henri Richardson Procter, FRS, came from a tanning family and was self-educated in the best traditions of the Victorian age, so much so that colleagues at the Yorkshire College, forerunner of the University of Leeds, considered that he could have held a chair in any of half-a-adozen departments : the Royal Society elected him a Fellow and the leather-sellers' Company made him a Honorary Liveryman.
Having had the privilege of studying in the Leather Department at Leeds University with teachers such as McCandlish and Atkin, who had themselves worked with Procter, it is a great honour to be giving this, the twenty-first Procter Memorial Lecture and repay some of the debt which I owe to them and to the Society, particularly as the tradition of Procter Memorial Lectures is to invite an eminent scientist from outside the industry.
The leather industry was fortunate in having such a person to establish formal higher education in leather studies in the UK, for not only did he make a successful transition from industry to academic life, but he was also instrumental in establishing the International Association of Leather Trades' Chemists. This progenitor of the IULTCS was formed during an inaugural meeting held in London (28-30 september 1897) with corresponding secretaries in Austria, France, Germany, Scandinavian countries and the USA. Procter and Dr J. Gordon Parket of Herold's Institute (subsquently the National Leather-sellers' College) were the joint secretaries.
It is interesting that the inaugural meeting, at which discussion cenred around the need for consistent analytical methods for vegetable tanning materials, included representatives from leather research stations in Berlin, Copenhagen, Freiberg (Saxony, DDR) and Vienna : three of which are still functioning today, the Copenhagen centre celebrating its centenary this year. It took British tanners another 35 years before they established a research centre.
The theme I wish to pursue in this Memorial Lecture is a retrospective review of Procter's Text-Book of Tanning, published 100 years ago in 1885, with a look to the future. Procter's book did not confine itself to the science and technologies of leather manufacture, but incluede chapters on engineering matters as well as commerce, economics and statistics. This latter point will serve as useful base for this discourse.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uIwFlEbOXngvF_z8NP5TsrMWy5CjjA_f/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9189

Even collagen, considered to be its most consistent component, shows characteristic chemical differences. Therefore, it is necessary to check the usefulness of the tanning methods for one type of skin before using them for others.
The purpose of the work discussed below was to check whether the method for enzymatic dehairing, elaborated and successfully used for pigskins on a commercial scale, may be used also for other kinds of skins. Calfskins were chosen as a subject to compare.
Calfskins from animals about one month old were sujbected to testing. The tests had a practical aspect in respect of environmental protection and the reclamation of hair which is valuable for felt production.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WUi-QHgL37qim9fF0lBbk48IJ8oHil5u/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9194

Tannage Résumé : The patented silflo air flotation process has been operated successfully at several tanneries to purify tannery wastewater (mainl to remove suspended solids but it does not remove dissolved inorganic salts. The next obvious step was to see whether this treated wastewater could be recycled back into all or some of the tanning operations in the interests of water conservation. Trials in the LIRI experimental tannery have shown that the crust leather produced with the silflo liquor from two tanneries - where this was used in all operations from the pre-soak to retanning - was as good as the crust leather made with tap water. This will now require confirmation in large-scale tanning. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A transamidification reaction was utilised to get low molecular weight peptides from waste skin trimmings and the transamidified peptides were subsequently treated with adipic acid and neutralised with aqueous ammonia which resulted in alkylamide polypeptides. The results of IR spectroscopyindicated that N-alkylamide polypeptides were actually formed. The thermogravimetric analysis has been done and it has been found that the transamidified protein is more stable than casein. The mechanical properties of the film formed using the transamidified polypeptides indicated that it possesses superior properties to those of casein film. The physical properties of leathers finished with transamidified polypeptides are comparable with those finished with casein and both are satisfactory. However, the wet rub fastness of leathers finished with transamidified polypeptide is slightly inferior to that of casein finished leathers. Scroggie, Auteur Année de publication : 1986 Article en page(s) : p. 50-55 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The sulphide-lime system for removing hair from hides still represents the most easily controllable and cost-efficient method available to a tanner despite the enormous amount of research which has been done in attempting to develop an alternative. Its major drawback today, however, is its severe environmental effect and it is this problem which has prompted the search for a non-polluting method.
A number of years ago, we adopted the approach that it would be more advantageous to develope a rapid hair-saving process which utilised, essentially, existing tannery equipment rather than an alternative hair destroying system. Ititially, we worked extensively with enzymes but were unable to find any with sufficient specificity to avoid collagen damage. That is not to say, however, that we have excluded the possibility of using enzymes, as developments in biotechnology may still be able to provide an enzyme of sufficient specificity.
The enzyme work enabled us to establish some important principles. Any hair-saving process would need to be a two-stage process. In the first stage, almost all of the hair (at least 90 %) is removed by a rapid chemical treatment. The small amount of redestroying stage, the conditions of which can be chosen to give the normal "liming action" on the hide. Finally there should be an efficient method for separating loosened hair from the hides.
Experiments with sulphide had been running concurrently with our enzyme work and eventually an approach using sulphide was developed which has become known as the SIROLIME process.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e_O7PlEdffG3lSNq0zhuWcp9q6h9xH5X/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9207

Titre : The water authority's service to industry Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : D. A. Bailey, Auteur Année de publication : 1986 Article en page(s) : p. 77-82 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The Water Authority's service to industry can be summed up fairly briefly ; it provides a supply of water for manufacturing processes and also for personal use by the workforce and subsequently arranges for its collection and suitable disposal after use together with a controlled level of added contamination. That is a simplified picture but, clearly, the reality is rather more complicated and one can anticipate a few questions.
On the supply side, which can be from the mains or a river or both, what is the quality ? What is the cost ? What is the reliability ? Also, on the disposal side, what are the conditions and what is the cost ? These are some of the matters on which I will try to provide information.
In order to make the main services available the authority must also attend to other responsibilities which constitute an important part of the overall service. These include the protection of surface and underground resources, i.e. reservoirs, rivers and streams, estuaries and tidal waters. It must also control some of these resources, to some extent, to avoid flooding and to supplement river flow during dry spells. In undertaking its multiple roles the water authority must operate within a tangle of legislation and other constraints as illustrated in Fig. 1.
A paper which I presented to the Northampton Group in 1976 dealt with the disposal of tannery wastes in relation to a Wather Authority's requirements. That paper explained why various conditions needed to be imposed and also provided some suggestions on how to meet those requirements. A second paper to the SCI explained the much wider role of the Water Authority. Much of what I said then remains relevant today but, since the publications are readily available for anyone still wishing to obtain the wider view, it would be wasteful now to go over the same ground.
During the ensuing nine years there have been quite a few changes, for example, more legislation, bulk transfers of water and alterations in the methods of charging customers. The objects of the present paper is to consider these changes in relation to their impact upon industry.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1g9qXxpIfhG_mrytVy4m7XR3z4JwA6rbH/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9210

Titre : Short-term preservation of hides in Zimbabwe Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : J. C. Barrett, Auteur Année de publication : 1986 Article en page(s) : p. 83-89 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The Cold Storage Commission produces some 450 000 hides per year wich at present are preserved by salting. This is causing effluent problems at abbatoirs and tanneries and there is great interest in alternative preservation systems, particularly for those hides destined for the local tanning industry where short-term preservation would be adequate. This paper reviews the scope for salt-free preservation of hides in Zimbabwe by improved drying methods, chemical reduction of water activity, radiation sterilisation, chilling, freezing and treatment with bactericides. The overall conclusion is that prospects appear good for developing a short-term hide preservation system appropriate to the needs of the Cold Storage Commissionin Zimbabwe. The most promising systems are based on chilling or treatment with bactericides such as benzalkonium chloride, boric acid Vantocil IB (ICI plc), Busan 30 and Busan 52 (Buckman Laboratories). Each system has different implications for capital costs, operating costs and flexibility in production, storage and marketing. Laboratory studies and field trials comparing selected treatments will be described in subsequent papers. The first such product was a liquid chrom tanning material which appeared on the American market. This was followed by drum-dried chrome tanning powders, readily soluble spray-dried chrome tanning materials and, later, by self-basifying chrome tanning materials. Recently, special chrome tanning materials from chrome tanning processes with high float exhaustion have been developed. Industrial progress, new production processes for leather and the development of chrome tanning materials have all interacted with each other.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1q3kQwf56M27kStYlsTKhkMrKbvt2hPXF/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9212

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The results of studies presented refer to calfskin compact tanning with the aim of producing leather fast to washing in organic solvents. The attempt was made to prepare and apply bifunctional preparations synthetised from chromium nitrate and a liquid fraction of molten pig fat waste. The composition of the preparation was studied using thin-layer chromatography technique and spectrophotometric methods. The technological usability assessment was made on the grounds of test tanning. The leather tanned with the tanning/fatliquoring preparation was fast to washing and contained 6.5 % of chemically bonded fat. The bifunctional preparation obtained can also be utilised as a finishing agent for skins in a wet blue state. Tannage Résumé : The ever-increasing cost of European domestic material, coupled with effluent and environmental problems in processing from the raw, has lead to an increasing tendency to process from wet blue or pickled imported stock of a generally recognised lower quality. At the same time, tanners from areas of the world associated with indigenous, low quality raw material are exporting their leather into the very lucrative and competitive European and North American markets. Both trends have led to an increase in technical considerations of process selection for the improvement of low quality stock. The origin of this stock literally circumvents the globe from South America through Africa to India and the Far East.
It is the purpose of this paper to suggest purely practical considerations, in leather production, of process control of lower quality to upbrade this material artificially.

Tannage Résumé : During the past decade a great deal of reserach work has been aimed at developing an alternative process to chrome tannage. The reasons for this search are welle known and will not be dwelt upon, but it has always been considered that such an alternative tannage must produce leather having similar properties to chrome tanned leather, particularly as regards hydrothermal stability. Several avenues have been followed by researchers, but the most promising approach seems to be that of a combination tannage involving vegetable tannins and aluminium salts.
The value of this type of combination tannage has been known for many years and has been employed to produce leather with hydrothermal stability, perspiration resistant leather and more durable bookbinding leather. However, this earlier work was performed without paying much attention to the theoretical side of the process and it was not until Slabbert of the South African Leather Industries Research Institute (LIRI) presented a paper to the Congress of the IULTCS held in Versailles in 1979 that there was an attempt to rationalise the theory of a vegetable/aluminium tannage. Since publication of that initial report, other papers have added to the fund of knowledge pertaining to the mechanism.
As things stand at present, by using the theory coupled with practical tanning processes in which the latest technology is employed, it can be said that a vegetable aluminium tannage which is typified by the Mimosa-Al tannage is established as a viable process. It can be employed to produce a wide range of leathers from firm shoeupper to soft garment in a rational and cost-effective manner. To process has the added attraction that crust stocks may be prepared at a number of stages to allow shipment and sorting, for example, to be carried out without the problem of rehydration which is associated with chrome tanned leather.
It is the object of this paper to report on a characteristic of Mimosa-Al leather which, because of the known properties of vegetable/aluminium tanned leather, was not anticipated to raise problems but which, nevertheless, has been investigated for the sake of throughness and to dispel any doubts on this score. It is well known that, unless certain precautions are taken, chrome tanned leather which is subsequently heavily retanned with vegetable tannins is prone to become weaker in strength after storage under hot/humid conditions and it has been suggested that the same is true of Mimosa-Al leather. LIRI has performed many trials with the Mimosa-Al process over the past years and it has been possible to make a study of the ageing characteristics of leathers produced by this tannage as compared to other combination tannages.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1G0EQ2I6eQFXxYotuZajInSb3crKjv6eH/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9234
