Langmaier, Auteur Année de publication : 1988 Article en page(s) : p. 7-18 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A mathematical model of the non-stationary non-isothermal microclimate inside the worn shoe was developed on the basis of the balance of moisture and heat transport in the system foot-shoe-surroundings. The solution of the model formed by a set of two partial differential equations and pertinent boundary and initial conditions was performed by use of the Laplace transformation. On the basis of the knowledge of a number of material and process parameters, the time dependences of humidity and temperature inside the shoe were calculated. The theoretical predictions agree well with experimental data. The natural material (side leather) has proved to be a better than microporous synthetics with which a favourable influence of the increased humidity sorption was observed for short-time wear, i.e. up to 4 h. The model can be used both for the prediction of the microclimate inside particular shoes and for comparison of footwear made from different materials. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Recycled chrome tanning liquors containing formate as masking agent have to be accurately fortified betweencycles to ensure consistent results. Up to now, residual formate concentrations have been guessed at because there has been no easy, quantitative assay for formate insuch recycle liquors. This work derives a suitable gas chromatographic method which measures formate directly using thermal conductivity detection.
Temperature and pH are shown to affect the elution profile and it was found best to separate formate on a poropak N column from a filtered (0.45 µm) solution at a pH>2 and oven temperature of 160°C. Unknown formate concentrations are read off directly from a linear, standardised graph. The measurements were shown to be quantitative and the method easy to perform.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mdYr5eD-yXPqRlFiPXeptJK06OR0ww97/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9090

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Oxazolidines are a new class of tanning agents which has been developed in recent years. The leathers obtained after treatment by oxazolidines are soft and light in colour. Oxazolidine, in combination with chrome, lead to a higher uptake of chromium than by treatment with chrome alone. A detailed study has been made in this field by preparing several oxazolidines and studying their tanning action using pickled sheepskin. Two of these, 1,3-oxazolidine and 3-hydroxyethyl-1,3-oxazolidine gave encouraging results. Studies were made with these oxazolidines and 3-hydroxyethyl-1,3-oxazolidine gave encouraging results.Studies were made with these oxazolidines to determine optimum concentration, pH of the bath and time required to obtain an improved result on pickled sheepskin. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In reports published in the seventies, we demonstrated the capacity of pancreatic enzyme preparation with high proteolytic activity for unhairing pigskins. The preparation from carefully subdivided cow or pig pancreas was stabilised with boric acid and acetone. The tests carried out, on a commercial scale, on several dozen tons of pigskins confirmed the results obtained in a laboratory on nubuck, suede, lining and gloving leathers. The quality of the leathers obtained was close to that of skins unhaired by means of sodium sulphide. However, the mechanical damage observed on the raw material was more noticeable. The main advantage of the production technology developed was the elimination of sodium sulphide and the better yield of bristles by comparison with the mechanical skin shearing method used at present. The above mentioned enzyme preparation is produced in Poland on a limited scale and applied for the bating of skins.
We later developed an improved version of the preparation. Instead of the volatile and highly flammable acetone, organic polyhydroxyl compounds were employed which increased the yield of enzyme per unit weight of raw pancreas and gave a more stable preparation, especially at higher temperatures. As the production of the preparation proved to be simple and cheap, it was possible to make it in tanneries and to utilise it in production. In 1985, the tannery at Debnica Kaszubska began the production of the preparation and its application for unhairing pigskins in continuous production.Note de contenu : - Production of pancreatic enzyme preparation in a tannery

Zakka, Auteur Année de publication : 1988 Article en page(s) : p. 89-93 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The agricultural use of effluent sludges is a natural means of nutrient and trace elements recovery with the aim of improving soil fertility and improvement of crops on different soils. The utilisation of tannery sludges for agricultural purpose has not found wide acceptance. The lack of interest should be attributed to the potential hazards associated with the presence of chromium in that type of sludge. Tannery sludges were thought to be applicable not only to agricultural land, but also to very poor soils for recultivation, for enrichment with organic nutrient materials, while bearing in mind that the levels of trace elements admissible for agricultural land should not be exceeded. In the region of Benghazi, for example, tannery sludges may be beneficial in afforestation programmes as well as in the stabilisation of sands by encouraging the establishment of grasses.
Another method of sludge utilisation is to compost it with refuse in municipal composting plants. The compost produced by this method may be used for all types of soil.
Combustion provides yet another method of utilisation or disposal. The relatively high calorific values of tannery sludges make them suitable for heat recovery by incineration. However, this process should be preceded by sludge make them dewatering and drying.
Prior to agricultural use, industrial sludges should be subjected to a detailed evaluation of their properties. Three major criteria are available to decide whether or not a given sludge is acceptable for agricultural needs, viz, trace elements, nutrients and hygiene. The first step of the evaluation procedure involves chemical analyses to determine the concentration of heavy metals, nutrients and macroelements. By this step, it is possible to arrive at a rough estimate of agricultural utilisation, as well as of the approximate sludge doses that may be applied to a given type of soil. Concurrent vegetation tests-ranging from the small experimental scale to the actual field scale should be carried out for arbitrarily selected species of plants.
A critical interpretation of the test results is required so aas to control the potential health hazards to man and other animals. This is a prerequisite to planning an optimum agricultural utilisation of industrial sludges, thus contributing to a successful management of the waste materials produced.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MYg485yXWQqLA6Hg96WoQOVFxHK1OcIC/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9098

[article]
Titre : Photometric determination of chromium (VI) using 1,5-diphenylcarbazide Type de document : texte imprimé Année de publication : 1988 Article en page(s) : p. 107-108 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : 1. Scope : The procedure described is suitable for the determination of chromium(VI) in natural waters, in solutions leached from leather or in waste waters, in concentrations of 0.5-4 mg/litre. The chromium(VI) must be in solution and this is generally the case. The presence of barium, lead and silver ions may lead to the precipitation of chromates ; in such cases the chromium(VI) present would be underestimated..
2. Principle : The procedure involves the photometric determination of chromium(VI) after reactionwith 1,5-diphenylcarbazide. It is based on German standard DIN 38406-E-10-3.
Chromium(VI) oxidises 1,5-diphenylcarbazide to 1,5-diphenylcarbazone which gives rise to a red/violet complex with chromium. the degree of spectral adsorption (i.e. extinctionp of this dye shows a linear relationship to the chromium(VI) concentration and is measured at 550 nm.
Chromium(III) and other metals are precipitated from a phosphate-buffred solution by the addition of aluminium sulphate prior to the chromium(VI) determination. Valency change of chromium due to oxidising or reducing substances is avoided through the addition of sulphites in the neutral sample followed by oxidation with hypochlorite.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-CKqppZfCQR3idpH7T8ARtsBvczGgBR4/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9100

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The degree of correlation between various upperleather physical test parameters has been examined in a set of experimental leathers obtained from controlled growth/nutritional trials carried out on a specific crossbreed. Results indicated that various stress-stress, strain-strain and stress-strain parameters were interrelated to a significant extent and, hence, reflected the same basic properties of the leather fibre structure. Predictive value varied depending on the particular correlation. Slaughter age (mass) was the predominant biological factor affecting full-grain leather strength and extensibility in the experimental leathers. Strength and extensibility decreased in more vertical weave angle and increase in grain-to-corium (major) layer ratio. Significant correlation between key upper leather test parameters provides a basis for mutual adjustment of minimum performance guidelines to reconcile acceptance limits in related tests. ParasitosesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A survey of 5250 goats and 4220 sheep in the Sudan for sarcoptic mange revealed an incidence of 5,5 % (290) in the former and 5,2 % (221) in the latter species, respectively.
Severe and localised or generalised lesions were seen in the infested animals. Skin scrapings from infested animals revealed numerous specimens of sarcoptes scabiei, showing that the animals were heavily infested.
Severe histopathological changes were seen in skin sections. These changes mainly comprised : hyperkeratosis, acanthosis ans scab formation, beneath which numerous mites were seen. Severe cellular infiltration, micro-abscessation, degenerative and necrotic changes and marked proliferation of connective tissue also occured.
Infested skins were green graded as "rejects" and the prepared crust leather was graded as "rejects" or "double rejects". Infested skins were difficult to finish into crust leather. The disease caused a marked reduction in the aesthetic appeal and cutting area of the leather. The crust leather prepared from infected skins was unsightly, hard, and fibrosed, with many tunnellings. The grain surface was coarse, rough and the fibres were loose and had a fluffy appearance. In severely infested areas, numerous holes were seen and, in some cases, the leather was completely damaged.
Leather sections from infested areas showed great distortion and disintegration of the fibres with large areas of micro-abscessation. Towards the grain surface, the fibres along the tunnels of the mite were eaten away, became thin, loose and had a fluffy appearance beneath which many empty spaces and areas of fibrosis were seen.
The disease caused a marked reduction in the tensile strength and apparent density of crust leather. In severely infested animals, the leather specimens were cut before the machine could even give a reading, showing complete loss of durability. The disease caused a false increase in the mean thickness and volume but brought about a marked reduction in the weight of the infested specimens.
Skins so affected were completelyrejected or fetched very low prices resulting in serious economic losses.
Goats were experimentally infested with sarcoptes scabiei mites. The results obtained from the clinical picture of the lesions produced, the grading of skins, the examination of histological and leather sections and physical testing of the crust leather produced, confirmed the results obtained from the survey. Treatment of the experimental lesions led to improvement of the quality of the leather eventually produced, showing that recovery from the damage could be obtained, providing that infested animals are (a) treated in the early stages of the disease and (b) ample time is given before the animals are slaughtered, in order to allow for proper restoration of the skin.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FMSFaYkUa5yy9034OWxCR5Vv3oVyZ3ha/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9104

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A comparative study of alkali and enzymic conditioning of "twinned" hide from calves, young and aged animals yielded some unique gelatines from the point of view of gels strength and isoelectric point (PI). The effect of collagen cross-linking with animal age was quantified. A preliminary examination of the gelatines by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and gel permeation chromatography yielded results from which it was possible to suggest a peptide-type collagen cross-link developing with animal age. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This report describes the adaptation of an isometric tension technique for use with skin samples. The technique involved measures the decay of the force produced when a specimen is held at constant length above the shrinkage temperature, Ts. The decline in force reflects the breaking of the thermolabile cross-links found in immature skin collagen and can thus be used to monitor the maturation process of skins. Haines, Auteur ; S. G. Shirley, Auteur ; R. L. Sykes, Auteur Année de publication : 1988 Article en page(s) : p. 170-176 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The stability of the collagen molecule is not constant but changes with the age of the naimal at the time of slaughter. In the case of sheep, skins from immature animals show different responses to the early stages of the leather manufacturing process and are commercially importnt. These differences are manifested by inconsistent and irregular surface appearance of the grain in the finished leather. Historically, in vitro "ageing" of semi-processed (pickled) pelts has made for more consistent leather. Work on the alternative approach of self-regulating, "chemical ageing" of untanned pelt is considered, along with an assessment of the laboratory technique developed from isometric tension phenomena which have proved most useful in monitoring these changes. A preliminary report into the role played by removal of proteoglycans in obtaining product regularity is included. Note de contenu : 1. Effect of age on the hydrothermal stability of sheepskin collagen.

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Interaction between sulpho-syntans and collagen represents a specific case of interation between two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes (PEL) resulting in polyelectrolyte complex formation. The specificity of this interaction relates to the fact that collagen (a polyampholyte having a spatially arranged structure of its own) must be converted into a polycation by means of protonisation and also that the whole process is complicated by heterogeneous conditions. In spite of this specificity, the interaction must conform to the general rules of formation of polyelectrolyte complexes for which electrostatic Coulomb's forces control combination in the initial phase. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Three groups of nine-month-old beef-type steers were fed on a high (treatment I), medium (treatment II) and low (treatment III) nutritional plane for a period of 21 weeks. At the end of this period, five cattle of each treatment were slaughtered. The remaining cattle of treatments II and III (the restricted groups) were then also fed on a high nutritional plane as for those from treatment I and allowed to grow to a final slaughter mass of 440 kg. Treatments were compared on an equal stage (0 week, control ; 23 and 39 weeks) and mass basis (210 kg, control ; 370 and 440 kg live mass) throughout the trial with respect to hide and leather yield and leather physical characteristics.
High yield (hide mass/carcase mass) was not influenced by nutritional restriction and/or a subsequent period of compensatory growth nor did the hide yield change over the entire trial period.
Leather yield (leather area/green hide mass) was higher for nutritionally restricted animals than for unrestricted animals after the initial 23 week period. This treatment difference was eliminated when treatments were compared on an equal mass basis (370 and 440 kg live mass). Leather yield decreased with growth of the animal.
Full-grain upper leather obtained from the hides of nutritionally restricted animals, particularly in treatment III, were stronger (higher tensile and tear strength and lastometer response at grain crack) and more extensible than upper leathers from the hides of unrestricted animals at 23 weeks and 370 kg live mass. These nutritional difference disappeared after the subsequent period of compensatory growth and treatment comparison at 39 weeks and at 370 kg live mass showed no significant differences in upper leather physical properties.
Leathers of greatest strength and extensibility were obtained from the weaner group of aniamsl and all leather physical characteristics (tensile properties, slit tear force and lastometer response) declined with animal growth. Microscopic examination of cross-sectional fibre structure indicated that features contributing to a decrease in leather strength were the development of coarser corium major fibre bundles with less interweaving, a higher angle of weave and an increase in grain-to-corium major ratio in the full-grain leather.
These results indicate that weaner steers subjected to a winter or drought nutritional restriction will produce hides and leathers of the same yield and physical characteristics as nutritionally unrestricted animals provided restricted animals are subsequently exposed to high nutritional veld or feedlot conditions and slaughtered at an equivalent stage of growth or at equivalent live mass.

By adhesion we mean the force required to pull the finish away from the underlying leather, the force being applied steadily at an angle of about 90° to a solid carrier to which the finish has been stuck.
1.2. Depending on the way the leather has been finished, the adhesion of the finish to the leather can be so low over the whole area or over only part of it be so low over the whole area or over only part of it that the finish separates from the leather during use. With finishes consisting of several layers, the separation may occur between the layers, for example, between the pigmented layer and the groung.
1.3. This method is valide for all finished leathers with a smooth surface, the surface of which can be made to adhere without penetration of the adhesive. Preliminary experiments may be necessary to clarify whether these conditions obtain.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/18kDUAHHfSW7ySs2c4UJ18EuX0E7klAY8/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9113
