Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The recently introduced amendment to the Consumer Goods Act in Germany concerns itself with the prohibition of the manufacture, marketing and import of consumer goods dyed with those azo dyes, which by cleavage of the azo bond(s) can liberate certain toxic listed aromatic amines. Inmany laboratory analytical methods the reduction of the azo bond is accomplished by treatment with sodium dithionite. However, using this strong reducing agent more than just the azo groups can be cleaved as specified in ther German Act. In some cases even new amines can be generated which are neither part of the dye structure nor involved in the synthesis of the dye. These additional amines are formed by a side reaction due to the analytical procedure used and can thus lead to incorrect analytical results. The choice of the principal factors, nature of the solvent, the dyes and degree of hydration of the leather must be carefully chosen so as to reach the required equilibrium. Due to the absence of an aqueous phase at the end of the operation and because of the opportunity to regenerate the solvent, all pollutant wastes are avoided. The method has been extended to cover a wide range of apolar organic solvents that are easier to recycle than water, the classic leather dyeing medium. It occurs at different stages of leather production and effluent treatment. At some stages, its formation may be avoided or reduced to an acceptablelevel by various technological measures, but at other locations malodorous air must be extracted and purified. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A combination of chromatography and spectroscopy has made it possible to reveal the major components of the commercially used chestnut (Castanea Sativa and vesc) tannin extract. Both cellulose and Sephadex LH-20 column were useful although the latter was more successful. Fast atom bombardment mass spectroscopy (FAB-MS) was used to identify individual components. Components of chestnut tannin extract were found having molecular mass range between 170 and 1850 daltons. An HPLC chromatogram showed that at least 17 major components were present in the chestnut extract. All components were derivatives of gallic acid ; no derivatives of catechin were found.
