Titre : Not only the topcoat matters : The scratch and mar resistance of UV-cured clearcoats depends also on the material underneath Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Philippe Barbeau, Auteur ; Benoît Magny, Auteur ; Soline Roche, Auteur ; Jean-Luc Loubet, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 14-23 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Nanoindentation and nanoscratch tests clearly show that the scratch resistance of coating systems is not only determined by the material properties of the topcoat. It is also the substrate, or the basecoat, underneath the topcoat, that influences the scratch resistance of the outer layer considerably. Thus, all layers should by considered, when building high performance scratch resistant coatings systems. Titre : Advances in B-hydroxyalkylamide cross-linking chemistry Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : René P. Franiau, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 24-28 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Exterior durable powder coatings based on ?-hydroxyalkylamide cross-linking agents are able to fulfil the most severe requirements for weathering resistance, corrosion protection and mechanical properties. The cross-linking kinetics and the rheological behaviour of a thermosetting powder coating depends on the composition of the base resin and the molecular structure and functionality of the crosslinking agent. Compared to the eixting ?-hydroxyalkylamide cross-linkers, the new product exhibits reduced reactivity in the first phase of the reaction without any significant changes to the overall curing process. The period of low viscosity or "open time" is increased, resulting in improved visual properties. Higher gloss, superior flow and blemish free coatings at higher film thickness are possible. Note de contenu : - TECHNICAL BACKGROUND : ?-hydroxyalkylamides cross-linkers - Curing chemistry of ?-hydroxyalkylamides - Reactivity and rheology - Curing profile.

Titre : Aqueous PUDs : Effect of isocyanate type on coating properties Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Vilas D. Athawale, Auteur ; Sunil N. Peshane, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 30-37 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Considering the growing awareness of the volatile organic compound (VOC) regulations and imperative development of waterborne surface coatings, a series of low VOC hydrophilically modified anionic aqueous polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) were prepared. The effect of aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic isocyanates (hard domains) on the coating properties of waterborne PUDs was studied extensively with regard to mechanical and performance properties. As the aromatic structure in polymer matrix increased the tensile strength increased remarkably where as elongation % decreased but the trend in this case was not so very distinct. The reactivity of isocyanate showed significant impact on bulk mechanical properties rather than surface mechanical properties. Titre : Prolonged open time : for new generation decorative paints Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Ad Overbeek, Auteur ; Jan Bouman, Auteur ; Ronald Tennebroek, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 38-46 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The growth of waterborne paints in the higher performance decorative paint segments has been slowed down due to a lack of open time, rheology, film build and scratch resistance. Over the years the improvement of the open time has been an intense area of research, but to date the typical paint rheology and brushing performance of a solvent based paint could not be achieved in a waterborne system. Very low viscosity oligomers are a solution for the open time problem. These oligomers remain liquid even after the evaporation of water and are self-crosslinking to achieve good final properties. The oligomers are combined with a dispersed polymer to reduce tack free times of the resulting coatings and to increase the rate of development of the properties. A model system is described where this effect is demonstrated. Note de contenu : - Synthesis of model systems
- Test methods for wet edge open time, dust free and tack free time.
- Phase inversion point - a critical point
- Change in rheology during drying
- Closing the paint
- Drying at different blend ratios of oligomer and polymer

Titre : Silico-epoxies against corrosion Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Gerhard Reusman, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 48-50 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The novel chemistry achieved by condensation reaction of an aliphatic epoxy with a polysiloxane results in an epoxy-siloxane hybrid binder whose unique physical characteristics allow its use as a durable binder. The new epoxy-siloxane coating system enables the zinc primer to be protected by a single topcoat. This results in reductions in application time, less overspray and a much simplified maintenance for corrosion protection. Furthermore the reduced number of coats and overspray results in about 70 % less solvent emission to the atmosphere. Titre : No contradiction : Optimised resins can offer lithographic inks with good flow, gloss misting and setting behaviour - all at once Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Kazuo Igarashi, Auteur ; Franz Giger, Auteur ; Roland Tschudy, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 52-57 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Vehicles for lithographic inks can be greatly improved by alcohol extraction of the low molecular components for commercial rosin modified phenolic resins. Inks based on these refined resins feature property pairs, that were throught to be principally excluding each other : They show both good gloss and fast setting (drying), both good misting and viscosity/flow behaviour, and both good water emulsification and start-up of printing jobs. Note de contenu : - Vehicle is the key quality component
- Conflicting properties : Gloss vs setting, misting vs flow
- Improvements, but no breakthrough
- The challenge : increase viscosity - drecrase thixotropy -> Misting - Ink transfer
- Medium molecular weight, few polar groups and side chains
- Extraction procedure
- Vehicle and ink production and characterisation
-Good misting and flow - good setting without compromising gloss
- Resin structure effects
- Precision temperature control is required in the manufacture
