Silsesquioxanes oligomères polyhèdresIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An array of quaternary ammonium functionalized-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (Q-POSS) compounds with different alkyl chain lengths and counter ions were synthesized using a two-step process. First, octasilane POSS was functionalized with dimethylamino groups by hydrosilylation with allyldimethylamine. Next, partial quaternization of the tertiaryamino-functional POSS was achieved using an alkyl halide to produce the Q-POSS. Alkyl chain length of the Q-POSS compounds varied from –C12H25 to –C18H37 and the counter ions varied between chlorine, bromine, and iodine. Moisture-cured polysiloxane coatings were prepared by dispersing Q-POSS molecules into a solution blend of silanol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane, methylacetoxysilane, and a catalyst. To evaluate the utility of the Q-POSS molecules as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial additive, the antimicrobial activity of the coatings toward the Gram-negative bacterium, Escherichia coli, the Gram-positive bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus, and the opportunistic fungal pathogen, Candida albicans, was determined using an agar plating method. The results obtained showed that both the composition of the Q-POSS and the composition of the polysiloxane matrix affected antimicrobial properties. Compositions were identified that inhibited the growth of all three microorganisms on the coating surface. Surface Raman spectroscopic analysis was performed on selected set of coatings to understand the relative concentration of Q-POSS molecules at the coating surface. These different structured POSS/GMA-containing copolymers are applied to build the porous films through breath-figures (BF) method. L-(PGMA-b-MA-POSS) is easy to form the ordered porous BF film, and T-(PGMA-b-MA-POSS)4 tends to form well-distributed BF film due to its high segment density which is beneficial to stabilize water drop. It is proven that solvent has a great effect on the morphologies of BF film. The perfect BF film is developed in the relatively wet atmosphere as 5–8 μm diameter of pores casted in THF and 2–4 μm diameter of pores casted in CH2Cl2 with regular morphology. The developed BF film has superior stability than the film developed in natural conditions due to the shorter stable balancing time. Therefore, it is believed that the obtained porous films show great potential in coating application. Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-containing fluorinated poly(styrene–acrylate)/SiO2 (POSS-FPSA/SiO2) composite materials were prepared by preemulsification and direct blending method. The SiO2 particles were induced aggregated onto the surface of POSS, and sol–gel processes were simultaneously carried out with addition of co-solvent to form raspberry-like structure. 29Si NMR and XRD results confirmed that POSS were successfully grafted to polymer and were evenly dispersed uniformly in polymer matrix. The average diameter of composite latexes increased from 63 to 81 nm with increasing addition of SiO2 content. AFM and WCA images confirmed that sol–gel processes were promoted by increasing addition of SiO2 content, which improved the roughness and hydrophobicity of composite films. XPS spectra displayed that two kinds of Si–O bonds existed on the surface of composite films. One was related to the Si–O groups of SiO2, and the other was attributed to the Si–O–Si groups obtained from the sol–gel processes. The peak area of the former decreased from 56.86% to 38.78%, while the latter increased from 43.14% to 62.22%. TGA curves demonstrated that the composite film exhibited better thermal stability when the SiO2 content was 10.0%. In addition, serious phase separation would decrease the thermal stability of composite films. ThermodurcissablesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This paper focuses on current trends in the flame retardancy of epoxy-based thermosets. This review examines the incorporation of additives in these polymers, including synergism effects. Reactive flame-retardants—which are incorporated in the polymer backbone—are reported and the use of fire-retardant epoxy coatings for materials protection is also considered. And also explains fire retardant mechanism of nanofiller to develop more efficient fire-retardant nano composites. Actually nanofillers are carbon nanotubes and clay which are attractive materials because addition of small amount of nanofillers can improve mechanical, thermal, electrical properties of plastics without changing the processability. However nanofillers themselves do not show excellent fire retardancy, Nanofilers should combine with other fire retardants. Some combination shows positive synergy and some case shows negative synergy effect. Then effective combination of nanofillers and conventional fire retardants are discussed in this article. ThiolsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The kinetics and thermal/physical properties of the trithiol-TAE (triallyl ether) system were measured with respect to increasing polyoligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) concentrations in order to understand how the presence of POSS nanoparticles affects network formation at low loadings. Vinyl POSS monomer (vPOSS-Bu4) with both vinyl and carboxylate pendant groups was synthesized via a thermally initiated, free-radical reaction to improve the compatibility of the inorganic particles with the trithiol and triallyl ether comomoners. Chemically modified vPOSS-Bu4 particles were incorporated into the trithiol-TAE polymer networks by a thiol-ene free-radical photopolymerization at molar concentrations of 0, 1, and 5 ene mol%. The polymerization rates were analyzed using real-time FTIR and photo-DSC. The polymerization rates showed no significant changes with increasing vPOSS-Bu4 concentration. Thermal analyses of the films by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that thermal stability improves without affecting T g as the POSS concentration increased. Additionally, scratch resistance increased and flame spread decreased markedly with increasing POSS concentration for concentrations up to 5 mol% vPOSS-Bu4.
