Cuirs et peaux -- DéfautsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Animal husbandry practies and their effects upon leather quality are increasingly important areas of research within the leather industry. The work carried out in this field includes correlating parasitic infestation with types of leather damage, and demonstrating the positive correlation between parasite free animals and leather quality, yield and value.
One of the most common types of damage seen on leather is known as light spot or fleck. These are small areas of grain enamel damage which, when dyed, are visible as a lighter colour than the normal regions of the grain due to differential dye uptake. Lightspot, refers to damage 1-3 mm in diameter whilst fleck refers to areas of less than 1 mm.
One of the major difficulties with light spot and fleck damage is the very small area it covers, making it very difficult to see until the leather has been dyed and subsequently dried. As leather is graded after tanning this results in many hides processed for aniline finishing being subsequently downgraded due to hide defects.Note de contenu : - Damage due to lice and stable fly

TiquesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Ticks are the most important ectoparasites affecting livestock in tropical and sub-tropical areas; they are members of the same phylum (Arthropoda) of the animal kingdom as insects, but are in a different class (Arachnida). There are two well-established families of ticks: the Ixodie (hard ticks) and Argasidae (soft ticks). Hard ticks are the family most commonly associted with cattle. Titre : Innovations in leather dyes Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Andrea Zamponi, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 79 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Colorants
Cuirs et peaux -- TeintureIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The demands made on the heat resistance, lightfastness and moisture resistance of dyes at the high-quality end of the market are continually increasing. In addition, leather dyes also have to fulfil a variety of ecological and toxicological requirements as shown in Fig. 1.
In order to satisfy demands from the high quality sector, innovative dye manufacturers have to address three key matters :
1. the links that exist between the chemical composition and fastness of each dye have to be investigated,
2. production processes need to be optimised and implemented to ensure that dyes are free of by-products that have a detrimental effect on their fastness,
3. new dyes have to be developed in order to establish a completely new benchmark for performance if the desired standards of fastness cannot be met on the basis of existing dye chemistry.Note de contenu : - Effects of manufacturing by-products on dye performance

SelsIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The problems associated with tannery effluent have been addressed by Michell Leather, Australia, in such a way that the sludges and effluent have become an asset. Sludges from effluents treatment are now being injected into the soil for land conditioning and as fertiliser, and the supernatant used for crop irrigation.
This treatment has required some changes in processing to ensure that the traditional wastes can be best used, and include:
- selective use of bactericides and fungicides
- processing chilled or iced hides instead of salted hides
- using a closed loop system in pickling and tanning to minimise salt recovery
- full chrome recovery
- reationalised use ot waterNote de contenu : - Effluent and sludge treatment

Titre : A case of cracking Type de document : texte imprimé Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 86-87 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Craquelures (défauts)
Cuirs et peaux -- DéfautsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Cracking a case is the objective of every good detective. Cracking a jake can be funny (depending on the joke) ; but cracking leather is no joke. The hunt is then on as to who is responsible and who can be blamed and made to pay compensation.
Cracks can occur at any stage of production, manufacture or in use. If detected immediately, then it is fairly easy to attribute cause. If not detected until later, it can be more difficult to establish the cause. This gives rise to 'passing of the buck', as each party tries to shift the blame elsewhere.Note de contenu : - The bargain shoes !

Titre : Genuine or not - it's here to stay Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : David Buirski, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 89-93 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Cuir synthétique Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Until the relatively recent past, shoe, glove and sporting goods manufacturers had a simple option - use leather or find something else which would not meet the performance, hand and longevity of beautifully finished hides and skins. Then came "man-made leather", but the real thing was still instantly recognisable to the consumer. The fake was obvious. Then came microfibres, the microscopic analysis of the hide structure itself and the technology to create near-clones of leather out of textiles. It's a new ball game now..
