The technique is based on the endothermic phase change which takes place when collagen is heated in the presence of excess water. The analyzer was designed to study large (75 g.) representative samples of comminuted hide. It was evaluated by testing tailor-made samples containing known percentages of heat-denatured hide collagen. The data indicate that the precision of the measurements was ten percent or better. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The previously described ERRL penetrometer was applied to butt samples from 185 blue sides, after splitting for grain upper leather, to evaluate its accuracy in selecting the weak sides in the lot at an intermediate stage of processing. Two new types of needles were compared with the one previously used ; these evaluations were supplemented by microscopic and ball-burst tests. Corresponding samples were similarly tested at the crust and finished stages.
Scoring of the composite data identified 34 weak sides in the lot, many with vertical fiber defect. Using appropriate cutoff points as a basis for sorting, each of the three needles gave acceptable results, but the one with a 100 taper was superior for several reasons. It improved the concentration of strong sides from the original 82 percent to a final 94 percent in the strong sort while segregating a weak group with 71 percent accuracy, which compared reasonably with experimental sorting in the crust by the destructive hall-burst or microscopie tests. Good correlation was also shown statistically between penetrometer measurements in the blue and hall-burst in the crust. This good predictability, coupled with its sorting performance and nondestructive nature, makes the penetrometer test a useful and practical tool for sorting blue stock after splitting. Other comparisons of test values with the ball-burst, within and between different stages of processing, were also evaluated in the form of correlation coefficients.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL :
