The physical properties also were compared for defective and normal leathers.
Samples of fresh ked-infested and uninfested sheepskins from three body locations, preserved with three fixatives, were evaluated hy several procedures for evidence of abnormal components such as inflammatory cells and interfibrillar cementing material. The results confirmed other reports of the increase in cellular infiltration in the grain (papillary) layer of infested skin, particularly hy eosinophilic leukocytes, which indicated an allergie reaction. Eosinophiles were also prevalent in the corium (reticular) layer. No other unusual interfibrillar material was found, nor was collagen composition nor elastic tissue content altered.
Standard strength and density measurements on garment suede and slipper upper leathers produced from normal and ked-infested sheepskin showed no difference in apparent density, but, more important, they showed lower strength and greater stiffness values for defective than for normal leathers. The reduced strength has not heen demonstrated before.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Skin samples for histology - Histological procedures - Microscopy - Hemetological and amino acid analyses - Leather samples for physical testing - Density - Physical strength tests
