Antiseptic properties of preservatives are found to have good correlation with their skin preservation property, but preservatives, though good for skin preservation, may he ineffective for the prevention of hair loosening. Unhairing is found to be quite rapid with certain preservatives and this has led to the development of a new system of dewooling of sheep skins or unhairing of skins and hides. During easy unhairing the skin remains free from bacterial penetration and is practically unaffected in quality. Skin surface may, however, be contaminated with bacteria but the microorganisms play no role in this unhairing process. Autolytic enzymes present in the skin are presumed to be responsible for the unhairing. A method has heen proposed for the evaluation of preservatives, taking into consideration both the aspects of skin preservation and prevention of unhairing. |
