Tannage Résumé : In this second part, we assessed the influence of a chromium retanning process applied to wet-blue hides fatliquored with eighteen different fatliquoring agents on yellowing, detanning and Cr(VI) formation after exposure to the separate effects of temperature and ultraviolet light. The results obtained for chromium retanned leathers are compared with those of non-retanned leathers in Part I.
The temperature test gave rise to less yellowing in chromium-retanned leathers than in non-retanned leathers. As for shrinkage temperature, there were no linear variations although a tendency to lower shrinkage in the retanned samples was observed.
Amounts of hexavalent chromium varied as a function of the fatliquor type. It may be concluded that the oxidised chromium present resulted from residual or weakly fixed chromium from the retanning process. Regarding fastness to ultraviolet light, both yellowing and shrinkage temperature reduction were lower in chromium retanned leathers.
Eight fatliquoring agents were selected in line with the results obtained. Their behaviour with respect to physical and organoleptic properties was compared with that of a sulphated triglyceride used as reference. The most suitable fatliquoring agents were suggested for four different leather articles.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Materials and methods - Evaluation of the treated samples

Tannage Résumé : Chrome Tanning, being still the most used tanning method, has been challenged more and more in the recent past. The main reasons were questions of sustainability and the fact that chromium VI can be formed in leathers tanned with chromium III compounds. From a technical point of view, many solutions exist for using the chrome tanning agent in a most economical and ecological way. In this paper another way is shown for maximizing the distribution of chromium in the cross section of the hide as well as the exhaustion of chromium from tanning float, thus reducing the total chromium emission into the environment. Also the leaching of chrome from wet blue during retanning operations will be considered. The type of chemicals used and the process conditions play an important role in this regard, as well as the type of chrome tannage used to manufacture the wet blue. Various measures and solutions will be discussed in this presentation. The role of chromium VI in tanning is looked at with special attention to the real risks associated with it. Finally the formation of chromium VI will be discussed as well as methods to prevent its formation. A new additive (anti oxidant), which is able to eliminate existing chromium VI and reduce the likelihood of reformation, will be introduced.

OxydationIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : Oxidation of organic molecule by metal is very important. Selective oxidants require non aqueous media, which is toxic and hazardous. L-methionine is oxidized to industrially important methyl thiol in micellar media by chromic acid. The overall reaction follows a first order dependency on substrate and hexavalent chromium and second order dependency on hydrogen ion. Here, reverse micelle formation is observed. TX-100 increases the rate where as SDS retards the rate of oxidation.
