Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In search for an eco-friendly enzymatic option for the unhairing process, a strain belonging to Bacillus spp. has been isolated and evaluated for its efficacy. In the laboratory scale experiments conducted, the activity and the performance of the enzyme satisfied the conditions necessary for its application in unhairing. The comparison of the microscopical structures of the enzyme treated and lime-sulphide treated pelts have been studied and these results along with the physical testing data for the strength properties of the leather are presented in this paper. These results indicate that the enzyme has good potential to be exploited as an environmentally friendly option in unhairing as the bend is more towards cleaner technologies presently. The FH that was obtained was in the molecular weight range of 15,000 daltons. It was used as a chrome exhaustion aid in chrome tanning and rechroming processes. Various studies on treated cow sides such as percent exhaustion of chromium, shrinkage temperature, strength properties, and scanning electron micrograph studies were carried out in comparison with control samples. The results showed that chromium uptake of the leather was increased by 10 - 20% in the sides treated with FH and the physical properties were comparable to the control samples.
