For example, the receptivity and stability of a surface for ink retention can be critically controlled by the state of its outermost atomic layers. Trace levels of contamination and the migration of additives to the bonding interfaces are all potential causes of print failure. Many problems in this industry are difficult to detect using conventional analysis techniques where the sampling depth and chemical specificity are insufficient. Techniques such as ToF SIMS and XPS provide a route to understanding the chemical properties of this region. Yet the application of these techniques in this sector is still relatively new with comparatively little work published in the open literature. This paper presents a series of worked examples from different aspects of the printing industry (from pigment formulation to consumer packaging) to illustrate how the surface can control product performance and how techniques for surface analysis play a critical role both in trouble shooting as well as new ink/formulation and product development. The latest advances for molecular identification by high resolution ToF SIMS and for film thickness/depth analysis by angle dependent XPS are also described.
