(Wikipedia)

Solutions (chimie)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This study examines the relationship of Cr(VI) formation in leather and wool fibres to the level of Cr and the ironing temperature in double-face processing. The chromium oxide levels in both the leather and wool fibres of the skins were measured. An increase in the amount of basic chromium sulphate used was shown to increase the chromium content in both leather and wool fibres. Related to this increase, parallel increases in the amount of Cr(VI) in leather and wool fibres were detected by the analysis method - DIN 53314 (IUC 18: 1997).
Furthermore, higher temperatures during the ironing processes produced higher levels of Cr(VI) in leather and wool fibres. To eliminate any false-positive results due to the interference of dyestuffs in the Cr(VI) determination with dark coloured extracts, Br2/water solutions were added to extract solutions and the measurements were repeated in the transparent extracts. A comparison of the results revealed that in the extracts with Br2/water addition, Cr(VI) values were lower and it was concluded that Br2/water solution eliminated the dyestuff interference and, therefore the false-positive results.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Double-face processing - Cr2O3 Analysis and Cr(VI) determinations - Decolorising the extract by Br2/water addition - Reaction mechanism of Br2/water

The applications at this stage greatly affect the use and appeal of the final products. In this study, the effect of different coating compositions on the physico-mechanical properties of leather was investigated. For this purpose, three different types of finishing formulations including semi-aniline, lightly pigmented and opaque finishes having different covering powers rated from light to heavy, respectively, were applied to the leathers and results were compared with uncoated counterparts. The findings of the study revealed that the application of lightly pigmented finishing statistically increased the tensile strength, single and double edge tear loads, and stitch tear resistance of the leather to a large extent. Semi-aniline and opaque finishing gave lower or, in some cases, statistically insignificant increases in the physico-mechanical properties of the leathers.

Wet-white (tannage)
ZirconiumIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Tanning with basic chromium sulphate is the most commercially favoured process in the manufacture of a variety of high quality leathers. Environmental restrictions to the disposal of chromium containing solids and effluents, as well as speculations concerning the presence of toxic and carcinogenic chromium(VI) traces in leather products, have already directed the industry towards using alternatives. Wet-white tannages which consist of zirconium (IV) and aluminium (III) salts with high durability and resistance and organic alternatives which use phosphonium, aldehydes and some syntans both types with more eco friendly and biodegradable characteristics seem to be the main options for industry. However, properties like high hydrothermal stability, tensile strength, and thickness cannot be achieved by any alternative single tanning method. In this study, collagen hydrolysates derived from gelatin manufacture were used to improve wet-white leather performance properties through combination with tanning agents comprising zirconium and aluminium salts, phosphonium salts and aldehydes. The result shows that the apparent density, shrinkage temperature, denaturation temperature and strength properties of differently tanned leathers increased with the addition of collagen hydrolysates. SEM analyses show that collagen fibres are dispersed after tanning. Besides, collagen hydrolysates make the fibres loosen and the fullness of leather is increased. The metals concerned were cobalt, chromium, copper, zinc, lead and nickel as these metals may be subject to restrictions in some products because of their toxic characteristics. Insole leathers, upper leathers and garment leathers were studied as likely contaminating sources because of their extensive contact with the human body.
Total amounts of heavy metals were initially measured by digestion. In addition, the possible amounts of heavy metals which would easily be extracted in use were extracted in aqueous and artificial perspiration solutions and analyzed using ICP-AES.
It was concluded that the heavy metal content of finished leathers depended mainly on the chemicals used in production, and in particular high chromium contents in leather goods were determined. Also, small amounts of cadmium, zinc, lead, cobalt and copper were detected due to chemical and physical reactions during dyeing and finishing processes. The results of heavy metal contents were compared with limit values for leather and textile articles.Note de contenu : - Table 1 : Conditions of ICP-AES analysis

Vapeur d'eauIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In this study, 1200 pairs of work shoes were examined that had caused complaints by users due to dampness resulting from perspiration in the shoes. It was determined that the upper leather was box calf, the lining was a polyether urethane-based synthetic textile product having a non-woven structure and the insole was a polymeric material of an ethylene- propylene diene rubber (EPDM)-based foam structure. It was also found that the water vapour permeability and water absorption properties of the synthetic insole used in the manufacturing of the work shoes were quite low. It was concluded that this prevented absorption of wetness formed inside the shoe and transfer of the damp to the air outside, and negatively affected foot comfort, causing user complaints.
