SyntansIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Leather being a natural material finds a most prominent position in the fashion field. Leather goods, garments and products symbolize luxury and comfort. Manufacturing of leather products requires meeting the physical and chemical norms stipulated by the international agencies depending on the end products. Among the various physical properties, sewability is very important in deciding the quality of manufactured products. The present research discusses about the effect of syntan and fatliquor on leather properties. Experiments have been designed with varied concentration of melamine syntan along with 10% fatliquor. Various physical characterizations such as sewability, tensile strength, grain crack and microscopic images have been studied to elucidate the effect of syntan and fatliquor on leather properties. The experimental results show that the presence of fatliquor is a critical component to achieve better sewability properties in leather. Similar effect has been observed in the case of grain crack and tensile strength of the crust leathers. Prosaically, the experimental data have shown that the usage of fatliquor shows better sewability property. Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The surface properties of leather are critical factors that influence the aesthetic quality of the leather. Commonly, organoleptic properties are evaluated for leathers to ascertain the bulk properties such as compactness, smoothness, softness and general grain appearance. Though these parameters are very subjective, still these properties are essential for leather product manufacture. In the current research, we discuss the correlation between the surface parameters and sewability of the leathers. In our earlier studies, we discussed the influence of syntans and fatliquors on sewability. In aligning to a similar subject, the impact of surface properties has been evaluated through contact angle measurements and correlated with the sewability properties of the leather. From the spread ability measurements, it can be inferred that the sewability properties are better towards the surface of the leather, which is more hydrophilic. This result agrees that the fatliquoringof leathers has enhanced the stitch ability; moreover, the studies provide biophysical parameter importance for qualifying leather sewability.
