RéflectanceIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : The author discuss the development of borosilicate based effect pigments.
Iridescent colours caused by light interference are well known in nature, such as in the colours of butterfly wings. For producing such interference effects on an industrial level naturel fish silver derive from fish silver derived fro fish scales was used in the beginning then succeeded by platelet shaped inorganic crystals (ie basic lead carbonate and bismuth oxychloride). Nowadays, pearlescent pigments based on natural mica represent by far the most important class of interference effect pigments. Those pigments consist of platelets coated with thin latyer of highly refractive metal oxide (eg TiO2) causing multiple reflection and interference oflight. Different colours can be created by variation of the thickness and material of the metal oxide layer.Note de contenu : - Borosilicate substrate

Pigments organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : It's a dilemma every paint and coatings formulator has faced : the trade-off between organic and inorganic pigments. For strong, bright colour, organic pigments are the best bet but in an application calls for great heat stability, extreme weathering properties and chemical resistance, then inorganic pigments are the only way to go. Unfortunately, the non-colouristic properties of organic pigments are not as good as those of inorganic pigments and inorganic pigments colours tend to be weaker and duller than organic pigments.
Formulators traditionally have been forced to make either/or decisions - either accepting a lower level of performance than optimal or paying more to achieve the desired attributes. This second choice often means paying for properties that are not needed in a particular application. Several years ago Engelhard Corporation scientists took on the cahllenge of creating pigments that combine the best properties of organic and inorganic pigment chemistries and provide better cost efficiency. By applying the company's vast experience and expertise in surface chemistry it created a 'synergistic' approach leading to the creation of Engelhard Synergy pigments.
Introduced in 2003 in the US and just last year in Europe, Synergy pigments already are gaining acceptance in a variety of industrial paint and coating applications. Customers who use the new pigments are achieving the exact colouristic and physical properties they want at costs 20-30% lower than traditional formulations.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27530

Protective coatings technology has evolved to minimise the impact on health, safety and environment, through the elimination of hazardous substances, the introduction of coating systems with longer service lives, coating systems compatible with alternative methods of surface preparation and reduction of VOCs to ensure compliance with increasingly stringent air regulations.
Further legislation will continue to challenge the protective coatings industry. Manufacturers will have to invest in the reformulation and development of coating systems to meet these challenges. Users will have to invest in alternative methods of surface preparation and application. As whole the protective coating sector must show initiative and be proactive in involving itself in the legislative processes in order to defend its market.Note de contenu : - Current and future legislation

Sécurité des produits de consommationIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Metal packaging is popular with industrial products brands as well as with consumers.
Packaging is an essential element in the sucess of industrial products, such as paints, coatings, varnishes, lacquers, inks and adhesives. Not only must it be durable enough to withstand aggressive chemical formulations and protect products from outside influences but industry changes increasingly require packaging to serve as a marketing vehicle for building brand recognition and loyalty.
Metal packaging has always been a popular choice for industrial products brands due to its durability and versability. New technology advancements have enable metal packaging to maintain these core benefits while also incorporating value-added features that enhance consumer convenience and boost visual appeal. These technolgies are vital for industrial products to utilise packaging as a brand-building tool capable of delivering a decisive competitive edge.
To help brand owners fully optimise and leverage the power of metal packaging, four key elements should be considered.Note de contenu : - Maintaining product integrity

Energy cure has been making great strides in recent years. According to a BASF study reported at RadTech Europe 2005 the high growth enjoyed by the radiation-curable market over the last 10 years is predicted to remain more or less unchecked until 2015, averaging 8-9% annually in Europe and NAFTA and 12-13% in Asia. The rapid development lying between the beginnings in the fifties when light-curing adhesives were mainly used in the furniture industry, the first upswing in the field of print colours in the seventies, the sophisticated developments in dentistry in the eighties and today's high-tech applications in micro-electronics is not over yet. For epoxy resins and acrylates curing through irradiation with UVA light or light in the visible wavelength range have become indispensable for many applications.
The advantages of the light-curing adhesives are obvious :
- Easy processing - for highly automated processes
- Curing in matter of seconds without temperature application - for fast inline production
- 'Curing in demand', ie adhesive only cures upon irradiation with light of necessary wavelength - easy integration in production lines
- Solvent-free - environmentally compliant and harmless to health
- hard and also flexible adhesive types - customised for your application
Already today, light-curing adhesives are used in numerous application areas ; and more will follow in the future. The chemical basis and three central development directions will be illustrated in the following. They will demonstrate how properties, which were regarded as impossible only few years ago, can be put into effect today.Note de contenu : - Two mechannisms with great affects

Revêtements -- Séchage sous rayonnement ultraviolet:Peinture -- Séchage sous rayonnement ultravioletTags : 'Matrice lumineuse semi-conductrice' Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This is an insight into how high intensity UV light sources will revolutionise curing technology.
It is interesting to note that though coatings have evolved and improved significantly over the last few decades, yielding faster cure, better properties, new pigment systems and gloss levels and safer materials, curing lamps has stayed basically the same. However, now that landscape is changing.
With the advent of new-intensity semiconductor UV light sources that can cure wide areas uniformly, radiation curing system customers now have access to clean, energy efficient, long life alternatives to traditional mercury lamp technology. As the new UV sources enter mass production, solid-state UV technology will revolutionise commercial processes like boat building, car repair, floor refinishing and other areas where a safe, portable easy-to-use UV source is critical.
The sources will also enable new applications for the first time. For example, low-temperature curing for temperature sensitive substrates, such as polyolefins is now enable, as is curing in areas where reduced green-house emissions and freedom from toxic waste generation are required.Note de contenu : - The problem with lamps
