Règlements de sécuritéIndex. décimale : 667.4 Encres Résumé : Food packaging and food contact materials are an important element in the overall effort to provide consumers worldwide with safe and nutritious food. Chemical compounds that are incorporated in printing ink, laminating adhesives and polymeric packaging materials to improve functionality, may interact with food components during processing or storage and migrate into the food. Once these compounds reach a specified limit, food quai ity and safety may be jeopardized. Migration limits have been set for many substances based on the toxicological risk assessment of these substances. These limits are included in Food Contact regulations with the aim to control the exposure to these substances to protect our health. It is a mandatory requirement for consumers to determine impact of packaging in contact with food on food safety. However, Printing ink and packaging manufacturers must be prepared to deal with a complex global regulatory landscape, in which individual jurisdictions have adopted different regulatory frameworks for the review and approval of food packaging and food contact materials and issue compliance declaration. The Glocal and Global regulations of Printing Inks on Food Contact Materials are not fully harmonized. It varies region to region or country to country even customer to customer. The approval process can be further complicated by customer procurement requirements based on voluntary standards promulgated by industry and trade groups, as well as by the specific substances used in printing ink and packaging materials. Polymeric packaging protects food during storage and transportation and withstands light, and mechanical and thermal stresses. Chemical compounds that are incorporated within polymeric packaging materials to improve functionality, may interact with food components during processing or storage and migrate into the food. Once these compounds reach a specified limit, food quality and safety may be jeopardised. Possible chemical migrants include: printing inks, coatings, plasticisers, antioxidants, thermal stabilisers, slip compounds and monomers. Chemical migration from food packaging is affected by a number of parameters including: the nature and complexity of food, the contact time and temperature of the system, the type of packaging contact layer and the properties of the migrants. Migration, under specific conditions, can be described as the mass transfer of chemicals from food packaging to food during storage and usage. Substances migrating to food give a bad odour to food and, thus, reduce consumer choice. Also because migrating substances create remains on food, they adversely affect food safety and quality. It is a mandatory requirement for suppliers to determine the impact of packaging in contact with food, on food safety. The global regulations on printing inks on food contact materials are not fully harmonised. They vary region to region or country to country.
For consumers' safety, the dynamic regulatory landscape and increasing number of regulations, present a challenge for companies developing and manufacturing food packaging or other food contact materials and articles. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the migration of chemical compounds into food and the challenges of polymeric packaging, as well as a discussion of regulatory issues.Note de contenu : - MIGRATION PROCESS

So stimulating growth through more sustainable products, resource efficiency and commitment to the environment has reached a critical mass of interest due to the demand of customers, environmental groups, investment firms, government agencies and consumers. Think economically; print ecologically - these two requirements are equally important to combine environmentally friendly production with business success.
Conventional printing inks, adhesives and polymer-based packaging materials have several harmful effects on ecologica I aspects, as well as human wellbeing, thus, eco-friendly alternatives to reduce/ solve the problem are desirable. Over the past few decades the production and application of synthetic polymers and printing ink-related materials have seen an almost exponentia I increase. However, concern regarding depletion of fossil resources, disposai and related issues, as well as government policies has led to thinking about the development of sustainability. Over the last few years, many printing ink manufacturers have moved towards more sustainable inks using phrases like "green", "environmentally friendly", "eco" inks etc. The terms "green" and "sustainable" are often used interchangeably, but they don't mean the same thing. Therefore, choosing suitable materials is very important in food packaging ink and adhesives.
