Pigskin leather lias been manufactured on a regular basis over the years. Much of its has been suede rather than grain leather because of the methods used in processing hogs. With the advent of new equipment for pulling hogskins, this raw stock is hecoming a significant material for the production of quality leathers, but because of its unique characteristics, attention must be paid to specific steps in processing to achieve the best pigskin lias to offer. It is our position that the steps requiring extra care are :
1. Degreasing — to eliminate fat without solvent;
2. Beaming and bating — to sof ten the shell without ragging the belly and shoulder ;
3. Retanning — to produce uniformity in temper over the skin;
4. Finishing — to give tough films that will suit the elastic high grain of pigskin without opening on pull-up or will cover grain defects.
These areas are the particular ones we wish to discuss. |
