A new composite is described which can form the hasis for a leatherlike material with viscoelastic and hygroscopic properties that, in all respects tested, closely resemble those of boxcalf. As its label "nathetic" indicates, the material consists of a nonwoven web of synthetic fibers with interjacent (natural) gelatin insoluhilized hy tanning. The method of production is a "dry" method, as compared with the "wet" method normally used for making reconstituted leather from a dispersion of collagen fibers. Present evidence suggests that, after the application of a suitable microporous finish, the comhined material handles and performs much like boxcalf in shoe uppers. |
