Microbiocides have been used in the leather industry for various purposes for many years. These purposes range from bacterial protection during sait curing to fungal control in boot leathers for tropical use in recent years, preservatives have been studied for temporary protection of green hides. For the most part, available preservatives are based on derivatives of phenol or mercury, and oftentimes are mixtures of compounds selected to provide broad range activity. With tightening regulations on the nature of chemicals entering vaste treatment plants and effluent streams and increasing concern about health and safety of empioyees handling toxicants, new chemicals which are improvements over available ones without sacrifice in efficacy are becoming more important to the tanning industry. |
