Modeling temperature and time dependence of the wetting of tool steel surfaces by polymer melts / Gernot Zitzenbacher in INTERNATIONAL POLYMER PROCESSING, Vol. XXXII, N° 2 (05/2017)
[article]
Titre : Modeling temperature and time dependence of the wetting of tool steel surfaces by polymer melts Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Gernot Zitzenbacher, Auteur ; M. Längauer, Auteur ; C. Holzer, Auteur Année de publication : 2017 Article en page(s) : p. 245-252 Note générale : Bibliogr.

PolypropylèneIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Beside the surface properties of the tool material, its temperature is an important parameter influencing the wettability of the tool surface by polymer melts in extrusion technology and injection molding. The temperature and time dependence of the contact angle of a polypropylene and a polymethylmethacrylate melt on polished tool steel was studied in this work at close to process conditions. The experiments were conducted by placing the polymeric sample on the hot tool material substrate in a high temperature chamber and recording the drop shape dependence on time. Based on the experimental results, a novel model was developed which allows a description of the contact angle dependent on temperature and time. The contact angle of the investigated polymer melts exhibits a linear decrease with rising temperature, which means that the wettability of the tool material by the polymer melt is improved with increasing temperature. Furthermore, the model proposed herein enables a complete mathematical description of the contact angle of polymer melts on the tool material dependent on temperature and time. The parameters of this function are the initial contact angle ?0, the contact angle when time approaches infinity ?? and a characteristic material time B. The time dependency is incorporated by an exponential function. The characterizing contact angle parameters (?0, ??) follow a linear decrease with rising temperature. The characteristic material time B obeys an exponential law dependent on the reciprocal value of temperature similar to Arrhenius' law.
Page=article&Vol=0006&NumArticle=6 Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5364

Spectroscopie de réflectanceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Surface wetting and spectrophotometric reflectance are important properties that are commonly used in the characterisation of the products arising in the surface coating-related industries. In this study, these two techniques were used as simple methods of monitoring the curing behavior of coatings of interest to the packaging sector. The fluid coatings were cured at different temperatures (160, 180, 200, 220, and 240°C) for 10 minutes.
In an extended study, the curing of the coatings was also carried out at 200°C for different time periods (5, 10 and 15 minutes, respectively). The results show that the techniques that were developed can be used as quality control procedures to monitor the extent to which the coatings are cured. Clear correlations were noted between instrumental measurements and visual assessments of the coatings. These techniques can be used to establish the consequences of employing variations in the curing conditions of the coatings because they lead to variation in molecular weight, structure development, film formation, cross-linking and interlocking in the coatings, as a consequence of increasing either the curing time or the curing temperature.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Coatings application and curing - Contact angle measurement and reflectance spectrophotometry

Multiphase coatings, including pigments, may be simulated, as well as polymers that change their sensitivity to degradation during weathering. The results of the Monte Carlo model are compared with those of macroscopic properties, such as, gloss, fracture toughness, and wetting contact angle. Simulated properties change through the lifetime of the coating in ways that are consistent with published results. Seemingly complicated changes in properties may be described by repeated simple, random processes.

Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Cycloaliphatic epoxide-functionalised polydimethylsiloxanes were coated onto a gel-coated fibreglass substrate and cured using two different light sources: UV light and visible light. Curing was accomplished through the use of an acid-generating photoinitiator, and a photosensitiser was used to shift the initiating wavelength into the visible region. The release potential, mechanical properties, surface tension, and contact angle of the cross-linked polymer were measured. The contact angle and surface tension of the UV-cured coatings were found to be 103° ± 0.05 and 10.93 ± 0.05mJ/m2, respectively. The contact angle and surface tension of the visible light-cured coatings were 102° and 11.42 ± 0.05mJ/m2, respectively. Pull-off adhesion tests revealed that a consistent 0.2MPa of normal force was required to remove the mould from both the UV- and visible light-cured coatings even after 30 releases. Both methods of cure offered the same release properties, but the visible light sample required a much longer cure time.
