Bimodal high-solids multiphase acrylic dispersions open up new prospects for the formulation of water-borne wood and trim paints with high opacity and sustainability. With their unique particle-size distribution, high-solids paints can be formulated with a rheology producing high wet-layer thickness, excellent sag resistance, levelling and opacity. The multiphase nature of the large and small particles enables low VOC formulations with good blocking resistance, film hardness development and chemical resistance. Mechanistic considerations, analytical details and methods to fine-tune both particle size distribution and film morphology are presented. Finally, a one-coat hide is demonstrated by utilising the higher solids of the binder in a semi-matt formulation. |
