Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is a widely recognized technique for identification and verification of functional groups in compounds, impurities. It is non-contact, non-destructive and no sample preparation is required. This technique has been used to identify several compounds, such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food, can readily be applied to the analysis of coating systems. Fourier transform infrared spectrometric method involves rapid and direct measurement of absorbance of functional groups. Certain groups of atoms give rise to bands at or near the same frequency regardless of the structure of the rest of the molecule. It is the persistence of these characteristics bands that permits the analyst to obtain useful structural information by simple inspection and reference to generalized charts of characteristic group frequencies. This review paper highlights the advantages of FTIR over the dispersive instrument and its applications in coating technology. |
