To evaluate the technical feasibility of waterborne primers, an extensive testing program was set up. These test series are intended to evaluate the performance of the primers and to validate their performance compared to solventborne primers. The test program is a result of cooperation of paint manufacturers, joinery industries and an organisation controlling the overall quality of joinery products. The usual test program consists of outdoor exposure and laboratory tests. Paint systems are exposed outside for four years. The complete paint system should have good outdoor durability during these four years, while the primer should have wood protecting properties on its own for one year's exposure. The outdoor exposure L-joints are evaluated for dry and wet adhesion, cracking, blistering, chalking and flaking. These durability tests are performed after optimum drying.Note de contenu : - Water uptake tests

Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the first part of an article on waterborne coatings for the wood industry the authors report on why a chain approach is needed from joinery industry to the building site.
Stricter legislation on the use of solvent borne coatings forces the Dutch joinery industry to consider alternative primer systems. A logical choice is to switch to waterborne primers. However, if these coatings are used in the typical DUtch way of building, then problems may arise.
The method of construction of houses in The Netherlands starts by putting up window frames and subsequently building brick walls around them. Therefore, during the construction phase, the primed wood is exposed to moisture (rain), cement and damages. Attention must, therefore, be paid to the performance of a waterborne coating in the first months after application.
It is known that waterborne coatings improve their performance after a longer drying time, but this may be critical if the film formation process has not been fully completed.Note de contenu : - Evaluation studies
