Scientists discuss the dramatic changes, which have taken place with pavement marking technology.
Marking paints for pavement surfaces used in roads, airfields and parking lots have been around for over 80 years but the technology has changed dramatically over that time. There has been a shift from the early days of oil-modified phenolformadehyde resins to alkyds, chlorinated rubber and solvent-based acrylics to today's more environmentally advanced and higher performing waterborne acrylic traffic paints. The binder breakthough which enabled the widespread use of waterborne paints was the invention of a pH triggered, quick set mechanism for faster drying waterborne paints, espacially under high humidity and low air flow conditions. Waterborne polymers continue to advance in terms of adhesion to surfaces and retention of reflective beads for night visibility.
More recent progress has enable the application of waterborne pavement marking paints under near freezing temperatures. Reflective beads have advanced along with the paint binder, providing waterborne pavement marking systems with significantly improved visibility on wet surfaces. The environment, employee safety and road safety all stand to benefit from the continuing improvements in waterborne pavement marking. |
