Proper selection of the polymer will determine the coating's physical and chemical properties as well as its protective capabilities. During the selection of these polymers, each systems advantages and shortcomings must be considered. For example, SB alkyd resins are often chosen in industrial coating applications because of their excellent gloss, good adhesion and wetting properties as well as excellent compatibility with other resin types. However, in many regions including North America, Western Europe and Japan, the consumption of SB alkyds has diminished as stringent environmental regulations have driven the industry towards lower VOC system. A novel technology seeks to turn this around. This study presents waterborne formulations using short and medium oil alkyds that rival solventborne coatings in terms of gloss, adhesion and corrosion resistance. Note de contenu : - State of the art achieves low VOC through chemical or physical modification
- Waterborne alkyd coatings comparable to solventborne using mechanical dispersion
- Experiments with short and medium oil alkyd resin dispersions demonstrate usefulness
- New formulations to improve properties
- Short oil alkyd dispersion is a top performer for metal protection
- Flexibility and corrosion resistance can be tailored to application
- Performance gap between WB and SB alkyd technologies closes
