Résumé : |
Pigment concentrates are widely used in the paint industry for providing reproducible optical properties such as colour, high gloss and opacity or transparency in the final coating. One of the major challenges dealing with modern aqueous pigment concentrates is the proper choice of wetting and dispersing additives. The requirements for suitable dispersants are to mention only a few : rapid pigment wetting, stable and long-lasting adsorption on to the pigment surface, low dosage requirements - Even for difficult-to-stabilise organic pigments and carbon blacks - No foam-stabilising tendencies, effective viscosity-depressing properties to formulate highly pigmented concentrates and wide compatibility with various letdown systems. VOC regulations are also becoming increasingly more stringent, so much so that the additive should be offered as a 100% solids material or dissolved in straight water. In terms of effectiveness, the balance between molecular weight, number and types of pigment adsorbing groups and compatibilising groups is crucial for the performance of a dispersant. |
