Résumé : |
This contribution has made PE the most commonly used plastic worldwide with current growth rates of 4 % and global consumption of 100 million t in 2018. While industry has in the past concentrated on the functional improvement of PE, the focus of development now is on sustainability, recycling, and reduction of CO2 emissions. |

- Range of suppliers
- Feedstock prices and production costs dictate choice of production site
- China is changing from a consumer to a producer
- Why China is gaining importance
- Durable applications are increasing
- Market opportunities in the pipe sector
- Power transmission and new regulations
- The classic pyramid : reduce, reuse, recycle
- Mechanical and chemical recycilng are gaining importance
- CO2 balance and renewable resources
- Figure : One of the most important applications for HDPE is impact-resistant pipelines. Here, durable polyethylene is replacing less reliable materials such as cast iron or concrete
- Fig. 1 : Global PE demand and average annual growth rates by 2023. For a growth rate of 4%, nearly ten new world-scale production plants are required
- Fig. 2 : Global PE demand by region
- Fig. 3 : Global PE capacities in 2018, broken down by the most important variants. LDPE capacities will not rise so sharply. The greatest increase is forecast for HDPE
- Fig. 4 : Capacities of the most important PE grades by region (forecast for 2023 based on contracts already agreed). China, in particular, is expected to undergo almost explosive growth in the upcoming years
- Fig. 5 : Global PE demand by segment shows the growth in the pipes and profiles sector |
