An injection molding machine not only processes plastics – it can also be used as a measuring instrument for the characterization of thermosetting plastic materials. And that is precisely what a material producer has now succeeded in doing with an installation in his test center. Hereby, he not only created a reliable quality tool, but also generated a large material data base. |

- FIGURES : 1. The sketch shows the additional pressures and temperatures that must be measured, as well as the torque - 2 3-D model of the redesigned plasticizing unit : two melt pressure sensors are fitted in the melting zone, two additional temperature sensors on the inner wall of the barrel - 3. The additional hydraulic sensors measure the outflow and return flow pressures of the hydraulic motor, enabling the torque to be recorded during the complete cycle - 4. Complete merging of all measurement values is required to describe the state of thermossetting molding compounds - 5. For the first time, several cycles can be synchronized and output automatically, and be analyzed in their entirety - 6. Material sample 1 exhibits a higher melt pressure and a different metering behavior than sample 2. This confirms that a recipe component is missing in sample 1
