Revêtements poudreIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The curing kinetics of UV-curable powder coatings based on commercial unsaturated polyesters were monitored using photo-DSC, Real-Time FTIR-ATR and a modified rheometer equipped with a UV source. The effect of physical and chemical factors on curing such as type of photoinitiator, photoinitiator concentration, temperature and atmosphere of curing were evaluated. Coatings containing amounts of photoinitiator from 0.5 to 10 wt% were cured at different temperatures in less than 10 s reaching conversions approximately of 60%. The increase of the temperature of curing reduces the final conversion and also the rate of polymerization due to the chain transfer process and depolymerization that dominates the photopolymerization at high temperatures. The reactivity of the photoinitiators was similar for all the studied photoinitiators apart from benzophenone that was found to be the slowest initiator. Moreover, thermally induced coating processes such as curing benefit from th euse of laser as it speeds up thermal processes that require high object temperatures. Radiation-curable powder coatings are one example of where laser application can make a difference by optimising curing and film formation. Note de contenu : - Line-focused laser beam to dry coatings

This study examined the environmental impact, based on life cycle analysis (LCA), of powder formulations that include two primer surfacers (a) acrylic and (b) polyester and compared them with a polyester solventborne primer. LCA is based on industrial ecology principles, taking into account all energy and materials flows throughout the production, use and end of life of a product. For the materials production, we have obtained energy and emissions information from paint manufacturers, literature and patents. A complete life cycle analysis of the materials was carried out using commercial state of the art software considering national average electricity production. The analysis evaluates omissions from the production of materials on a per kilogram basis as well as per vehicle application. Note de contenu : - LCA of the materials
- Investigation of three different primers
- Production of acrylic powder primer coatings is more energy intensive than the polyester ones
