A stoichiometric amount of tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) was added as a crosslinker to the blocked polyisocyanate dispersions resulting in one-package crosslinkable, waterborne urethane coatings. The samples were characterized by means of mechanical properties, chemical resistance, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The deblocking kinetics of the blocked polyisocyanates at different baking temperatures were studied. ToxicologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The Environmental Protection Agency has legislated more stringent air quality laws which has created the need for new innovation in the development of low VOC coatings. In the quest for a more environmentally compliant coating, a number of new technologies have become available from coatings manufacturers. One field of study that has gained interest is that of radiation curable products initiated by either ultraviolet light (UV) or electron beam (EB). Ultraviolet light curable coatings are one component systems that combine the benefits of rapid film formation and low VOC into high quality coatings. This paper will discuss cationic and free radical polymerization, types of photoinitiators, toxicology, application, and potential markets. Revêtements -- Propriétés mécaniques:Peinture -- Propriétés mécaniquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of different hyperbranched aliphatic polyester resins with acrylate functionality have been synthesized, characterized, and UV cured. The terminal groups have been either benzoates, propionates, or hydroxyls. The glass transition (Tg) and viscosity of the resins have been shown to depend on the polarity of the end groups. The increase in viscosity gives the hydroxy functional resin the highest viscosity, while the propionate functional resin has the lowest Tg and viscosity. The acrylates are all free radically UV cured with little or no oxygen inhibition found. The residual unsaturation in the cured films is not detectable with Raman spectroscopy, i.e., less than five percent. The cured films are all hard with a Tg difference varying with the structure of terminal groups in the resins. RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The oxazolidine product (Zoldine RD-20) and the oxazolidine-aldimine product (Zoldine RD-4) have been shown to perform as highly effective reactive diluents. These products both possess extremely low intrinsic viscosities at 100% solids and function as very good diluents in millbases or when blended with higher viscosity polyols. They also provide great flexibility in pot life and controlled reactivity as co-reactants for polyisocyanates in high-solids coatings.
Oxazolidine and oxazolidine-aldimine reactive diluents were shown to significantly increase solids at equivalent system viscosity in polyurethane coatings. As a result these materials represent a viable technology to significantly reduce VOC in higher solids systems. Performance improvements can also be expected in the areas of impact resistance and abrasion resistance when these compounds are employed as an integral part of high-solids polyurethane coatings. More importantly, these compounds will substantially improve the weathering performance of polyester polyurethanes even in the absence of UV inhibitors.Note de contenu : - Reactive diluents
