Fabrication methods combining a laminating process, hand lay-up and compression moulding were developed and utilised to manufacture bio-composite specimens from naturally-sourced fibres such as palm and coir. The mechanical properties of these bio-composite materials were analysed and evaluated through impact, tensile, compression and bending tests. However, the mechanical performance of the bio-composites was found to be inferior to that of conventional glass fibre composites. The hybridization of natural fibres with glass fibre composites provides a significant increase in specific strength and specific modulus. |
