Sulfate de dermataneIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The article presents the final research into the system containing NaOH, Na2S, and a salt such as NaCl, Na2SO4 or Na2HPO4 and their influence on the properties of pelt and leather. Here are two main pointsof the investigations : the establishment of dermatan sulphate changes during unhairing and the microscopy investigation.
It was established that the unhairing method influences the amount of dermatan sulphate in pelt. The method for dermatan sulphate determination was developed and used in this research. The results show that a strongly alkaline action does not increase the removal of dermatan sulphate.
As collagen’s chemical and physical changes could be reflected in its structure, optical and scanning electron microscopy analyses of pelt and leather grain and corium were carried out. The micrographs show that the structure of pelt and leather depends on the unhairing method and it differs-differences in opening-up level are observed. These differences are clearly visible and depend on the method of unhairing. The microscopy images confirm the importance of the role of salts, which are added to the unhairing system NaOH+Na2S.Note de contenu : - Improvement of dermatan sulphate determination

ThermodynamiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The interaction of leather, prepared by the lime-free method, and a series of 1:2 metal complex dyes has been investigated by determining the distribution of the dyes at equilibrium. Kinetic and thermodynamic aspects such as the rate of dyeing, heat of dyeing, entropy, affinity of dyes on the lime-free and conventional leather have been studied. The diffusion coefficient was calculated by means of the Weisz pore and Krenk models.
It has been established that the sorption isotherms for these dyes on both types of leather fibres show a Langmuir type of behaviour. The dyeing system hydrophobic C.I. Acid Red 247/lime-free leather has a positive heat of dyeing: dyeing is an endothermic process in this case.
The change of entropy of interaction of hydrophobic C.I. Acid Red 247 and leather fibres is 24 cal/mol•K. An increased degree of freedom should be associated with water molecules such as those hydrating the dye and the fibre, and possibly, due to randomness in the fibre itself. This decreased degree of the order of water molecules results in a positive change of entropy, which then is the thermodynamic cause of the hydrophobic bonding.
The influence of factors such as, initial amount of dye, pH of leather and temperature on the dyeing process was established. The results have shown that lime-free leather absorbs lesser amounts of dye during dyeing but that, the dye penetrates more deeply compared with conventional leather. The amount of dye, pH and temperature has no influence on such a tendency.
On the other hand, the investigation has shown that the factors mentioned have a more marked influence on the progress of dyeing of lime-free leather compared with dyeing conventional leather. This means that inconsiderable deviation from determined parameters of dyeing can markedly deteriorate the quality of the dyed leather.

StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Sodium aluminate as an alternative to calcium hydroxide was tested in the hide unhairing process and the possibility of such replacement was confirmed. Qualitative unhairing is achieved using water solution containing sodium aluminate 2–3% and sodium sulphide 1.3–1.5%. The effect on collagen during unhairing using the sodium aluminate is significantly less than that of conventional liming. An addition of 0.5% NaOH allows better opening up of the derma to be obtained. Industrial trials of lime-free unhairing using sodium aluminate have shown that the leather produced meets the quality requirements for shoe upper leathers. Lime-free unhairing using sodium aluminate leads to less pollution of wastewater by TSS, Kjeldhal nitrogen and sulphides. Note de contenu : - Raw material

TachesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Lime speck, which is first clearly recognised in the pickled pelt as white spots or areas, was experimentally shown to originate in the painted skin According to X-ray analysis and microscopical examination the defect is due to gypsum (CaS042H20) within the grain layer. While painted skin piled for one day before pulling remained clear, skin piled for three days or four days developed speck. The effect was aggravated at raised temperature and by drying, though skin which was still moist at the end of piling could also become speckled. X-ray analysis of limed, bated, and pickled pelts showed that calcium carbonate (in the form of calcite) was the precursor in the limed pelt of speck in the pickled. Nevertheless, calcium carbonate present as calcite in the lime used for the paint did not affect the incidence of speck. It appears that calcite as precursor is formed in situ and, so long as sufficient calcium ions and carbon dioxide are available, will form if, during piling, water is extracted from the system by the collagen fibres (tending to plump under the alkaline conditions) or by the fleece (competing with the pelt for water) or by evaporative drying.
The small amount of calcite found in the clear limed pelt appeared to have been directly transformed into gypsum in the clear pickled pelt, but an intermediate, vaterite—another form of calcium carbonate—occurred in the affected bated pelt: its role in the transformation to gypsum is not understood.
The practical implications of the work are: duration of piling should be kept short, skins should be piled cool and in a cool place, conditions encouraging skins to heat in pile and conditions that could allow evaporative drying to start should be avoided.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENT I : The effect of drying and duration in pile - X-ray diffusion analysis - Results

The possible reduction in water consumption by float recyclinbg and in effluent loadings by precipitation and separation of proteins contained inthe liming effluents were also investigated.
On the basis of preliminary trials, a second order central rotatable design as a function of both the hydrogen peroxide offer and the mechanical action of the drum, was applied to detemrine the variation of selected physical properties of chrome leather previously subjected to the oxidative liming process. This process was compared with a conventional liming process with sodium sulphide and calcium hydroxide.
