Titre : Alternatives to chromium tanning - Part III : effect of organic acid anions on aluminium sulphate tannage of collagen Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : K. C. Montgomery, Auteur Année de publication : 1987 Article en page(s) : p. 59-67 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Various aliphatic carboxylic acids and hydroxy-acids, aromatic carboxylic acids and phenols have been evaluated as masking agents for potential application in a solo aluminium sulphate tannage to replace conventional chromium tanning. Lamb intestine was used as the source of collagen and tanning effectiveness was assessed primarily by measurement of shrinkage temperature (Ts).
The importance of the presence and position of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in both aliphatic and aromatic compounds has been demonstrated.
Phthalate is the most promising masking agent for the production of white aluminium tanned leather while ketomalonate, mucate, 2,4-dihydroxymandelate and gallate also produced useful increases in shrinkage temperature.
Citrate was confirmed as the stongest aliphatic complexing agent for basic aluminium sulphate and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate was shown to be the strongest aromatic complexing agent.
The covalent introduction of these or related carboxylates into collagen is suggested as a means of increasing the effectiveness of aluminium tannage.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/15CKP4frBxFeCZ__dOu_ICpkxXJV2diOj/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9155

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Solo aluminium, combination aluminium and a range of other tannages were investigated for their stability under acidic conditions, particularly conditions likely to be encountered in woolskin dyeing. Most aluminium tannages, including the well-established vegetable-aluminium tannage, deteriorated under the conditions of a standard dyebath test method developed for this investigation. Titre : Alum and the leather industry Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Roy Thomson, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p. 125-129 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : It has been suggested that alum was used to produce leather from at least egyptian and babylonian times but recent work suggests that alum was used in the process of dyeing skinss rather than for tanning. Lack of definitive evidence for the use of alum for tawing during the roman period will be referred to. Linguistic studies indicate that the difference between the materials produced by alum and vegetable tannins were recognised, appreciated and exploited by mediaeval craftsmen. The methods employed during mediaeval and later times for the manufacture of alum tawed skins as revealed in contemporary documents will be discussed. Later developments in the modification of tawing processes to give a wider range of leather properties will be mentioned. recent developments in the production of archival bookbinding leathers and the challenges arising when conserving alum tawed leather artefacts will be summarised.
