We had demonstrated that the traditional dehairing agent, sodium sulfide, can be replaced by an oxidative dehairing agent, sodium perborate, thereby reducing the amount of hazardous chemical in the waste stream. The by-product of perborate is borate, however, which is suspected to accelerate the degradation of wooden dehairing drums. In this paper we report the results of a study that uses sodium percarbonate as the dehairing agent. Although oxidatively dehaired hides exhibit a slight resistance to acid dye uptake, leather produced from percarbonate-dehaired hides in all other studied aspects -- shrinkage temperature, chromium uptake, elongation at break, toughness index -- compared favorably to leather from sulfide-dehaired hides. This unhairing system, which was carried out on a pilot plant scale, enables hair recovery and recirculation of floats in order to save water. The effect of the amine and enzyme products on the properties of vegetable-tanned leather was studied. In addition, five more consecutive unhairing processes were carried out by recirculating the effluents and reusing them according to their composition. After analysing the floats, the results obtained were compared to those achieved by using a reductive unhairing process with hair recovery. The results showed a 65 percent saving of water and a 97 percent decrease in toxicity. These results were compared with the bibliographical values of a reductive unhairing with hair dissolution. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : As an alternative to the traditional process based on the use of sulfides, an unhairing process in drum by hydrogen peroxide was developed for the production of high-quality bovine upper leather. A preliminary investigation at laboratory scale has allowed us to set out the optimal process conditions, in terms of H2O2 dosage and pH, in order to achieve an effective unhairing and a compatible swelling of the hide. The pilot and industrial scale runs have assessed the industrial feasibility of the process that allows the production of a versatile base for different final applications of the leather (either chrome or vegetable tanned), and appear practical to implement as well as compatible with existing machinery. The finished leather obtained by the innovative unhairing process shows good physical-mechanical and technical properties comparable with those of the traditional process, and the leather was technically assessed as satisfactory and suitable for use in the production of high quality upper leathers. The major pollutants of the oxidative unhairing, either as absolute concentrations or if normalized with respect to the salted weight of hide processed, appear quite similar to those from the traditional process. The evident advantage is obviously the complete absence of dissolved sulfides in the exhaust baths of the oxidative process. Scanning electron microscopy was used as investigation method to better understand the mechanism of the oxidative unhairing in comparison with the traditional.

ZirconiumIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) oxidized maltodextrin was prepared as the ligand for aluminum–zirconium complex tanning. The effects of catalyst dosage, initiation temperature, and H2O2 dosage on maltodextrin oxidation were investigated. FT-IR analysis demonstrated that carboxyl groups were successfully introduced into oxidized maltodextrin. The carboxyl content and degradation degree of oxidized maltodextrin increased with the increase of H2O2 dosage. Maltodextrin oxidized by 40% H2O2 and 0.015% Cu–Fe catalyst at an initiation temperature of 70°C (OD-40) with moderate carboxyl group (6.75 mmol/g) and molecular weight (Mw 450) promoted the penetration and fixation of aluminum–zirconium salts in leather and showed better tanning performance, such as hydrothermal stability and porosity of leather, than traditional citric acid ligand.
