Chromium is a naturally-occurring element found in rocks, animals, plants, and soif. It can exist in several different forms. The most common forms are chromium (0), chromium (III), and chromium (VI), which is also known as hexavalent chromium.
Chrome tanned leather is an extremely useful and valuable commodity because of its versatile nature. The naturally occurring Chrome III which is used as the tanning agent is perfectly safe if the leather is produced under the correct conditions and must not be confused with Chrome VI.
The supply chain must, however, be diligent in checking that the more harmful chrome VI has not been generated during the lifecycle of the product.Note de contenu : - Trivalent chromium - Chrome 3 - Cr3 - Cr III

An attempt to recover chromium from such leather wastes so as to reduce the chromium that ends up in the landfill was studied. A method of recovery of the chromium in chromium tanned leathers by controlled closed furnace incineration and by employing the protein matrix as an energy source as well as a template for chromium(III) oxide synthesis is detailed. This method provides the advantage of reducing the chromium residues from the leather industry while producing chromite ore ultimately useful in the preparation of pigmented coatings. The dry pigment obtained was green colored and could be further processed and formulated as a pigmented coating (paint). When the chrome shavings were mixed with iron sulfate and then incinerated, a brown colored paint coating was achieved. The best conditions for zero generation/discharge of hazardous chromium(VI) were determined. The pigments developed were characterized in detail by XRD and SEM-EDAX. Photon correlation spectroscopy measurements indicate that the calcined pigments prior to further size reduction were in the range of 300-400 nm. The ice formed shows chromium levels lower than the initial wastewaters. The process can be used for switching from chromium (III) containing wastewaters to practically total reuse. The water obtained by the melting of ice crystals still contains some chromium traces but can be used for hide soaking and washing, or for the preparation of pickling solutions. Determination of chromium(VI) in leather using extraction with pH5.5 and 8.0 artificial perspiration solution and subsequent determination with DPC photometric method has been studied. The linearity, repeatability and recovery percentage were tested to evaluate the determination methods. The results show that the experimental methods have good linearity, feasibility and reliability. The result also illustrate that less chromium(VI) is extracted from leather with pH5.5 artificial perspiration solution than with pH8.0 alkaline artificial perspiration solution. Various possibilities have been cited for the formation of chromium(VI) in leather. The factors which could bring about the oxidation of chromium(III) to chromium(VI) are photo ageing, thermal ageing and high pH conditions. In this study, the possibility of basic chromium sulphate (BCS) as a source for formation of chromium(VI) in leather has been explored. Thermal studies on BCS and chrome tanned hide powder were carried out at different time intervals. It was observed that oxidation of chromium(III) to chromium(VI) in BCS and chrome tanned hide powder occurred under high temperature conditions.
