La légende veut que la création du cuir de Russie soit le fait du hasard : un cosaque chevauchant dans les steppes aurait frotté ses bottes contre l’écorce des bouleaux et les aurait ainsi imperméabilisées. Le cuir de Russie était né. Dans les années 1920, Paris était à la russe. Hermès créait une gamme d’objets en cuir façon de Russie qui rythmaient la vie élégante d’une société raffinée. En 1924, Coco Chanel inventait des costumes pour les Ballets russes de Diaghilev et le parfum Cuir de Russie, féminisant une fragrance qui séduisait de nombreux parfumeurs. Le musée et le conservatoire Hermès ont dévoilé leurs trésors pour ce livre. Avec Élise Blouet, Andrew Parr, un tanneur anglais, et l’expertise de Marc Stoltz, Hermès, fidèle à sa qualité visionnaire, fait renaître ce cuir d’exception et célèbre dans le secret de ses ateliers, l’amour de la belle matière et le savoir-faire de la main.
