While car manufacturers are working on electric, autonomous, and connected vehicles, plastics producers are developing the appropriate materials for these. New PMMA molding materials show how design elements will fulfill more and more functions and new sensors and LEDs are influencing material development. |
Note de contenu : |
- Focus on exterior design
- Long light guides - a new design element
- Feel-good atmosphere in the car interior
- Safer driving
- Seeing and being seen
- Fig.1. "Sharing instead of owning" is a trend that is evident in the increasing number of car-sharing offers. When vehicle use is shared, surfaces should be easy to clean and robust. Plexiglas Hi-Gloss NTX 15 is even more wipe-resistant than molding material Plexi¬glas Hi-Gloss FT 15
- Fig. 2. Light transmission of various gray PMMA grades as a function of thickness. By fine tuning gray values, the boundary between a purely decorative cover and a functional display (dark panel) can hardly be distinguished
- Fig. 3. As long as drivers still have to drive themselves, intuitive control devices will be required. Additional orientation on the touch screen is provided by haptic localization aids made of Pleximid from specialist in operating systems Preh GmbH
- Fig. 4. Results of two-way damping at 77 GHZ. For radar sensors, damping values for 76 to 77GHz are required. As a rule, component-specific material damping should not exceed a value of 2dB in two-way damping, since otherwise this would lead to an unacceptable loss of the sensor's operating range
- Fig. 5. Long-term thermal overstressing of PMMA can lead to slight thermooxidative yellowing. The chromophore components so produced can be further degraded by the high LED luminous fluxes, as the yellowness index values for Plexiglas 8N at 100°C show (intensity : 0,1 W/cm2) |
