Lightweight is no longer just a matter of replacing metal. More and more often, plastics already in use are substituted by lighter weight polymers. New low-density compounds exhibit not only good materials and processing properties. On top of that, they offer various secondary advantages, such as are illustrated by an engine room bulkhead cover and a car door sill. |
Note de contenu : |
- Bulkhead cover: same properties, cut density
- No alterations required to the existing mold
- Lighter door sills thanks to better fillers
- Hollow glass sphere-compound with improved scratch resistance
- FIGURES : 1. The engine room buklhead cover from modified polyamide Schulamid RD6 GF30 turns out to be 9% lighter than its PA6-GF30 predecessor, but has comparable materials properties. The compound also exhibits improved adhesion to TPE sealants - 2. Comparison of the relevant material characteristics data (conditioned values) for applying both Schulamid 6 GF30 and the lower density drop-in version, Schulamid RD6 GF 30 - 3. Prototype of a PP door still that turns out to be some 15 % lighter than the talc-filled PP version thanks to Polyfort PPC MGB 6 RD. The additionally improved flowability proves its worth on this 1250 mm long part - 4. Comparison of the relevant materials characteristics data for applying both Polyfort FIPP 20 T and the lower density drop-in-version Polyfort PPC MGB 6 RD - 5. The new, hollow glass microsphere compound Polyfort PPC MGB 6RD is more scratch-resistant than the commonly used talc-reinforced PP compound (scratch test according to automobile norm PV 3952)
- TABLES : 1. Comparison of selected materials characteristics of Schulamid 6 GF30 and of its reduced-density RD version. The RD type is more dimensionally stable, absorbs less water, and has comparable mechanical properties - 2. Comparison of the relevant materials characteristics data of the talc-reinforced polypropylene with those of the scratch-resistant PP with hollow glass spheres |
