Sound, solid wood can last for centuries. Nevertheless, wood is susceptible to biological and physical degradation. Therefore it needs to be protected properly, all the more when using less durable species. A variety of finishes can be applied. These coatings must meet certain minimum requirements, among which are sufficient penetration, resistance to physical and biological discoloration, and good adhesion. The last is considered the utmost important factor for the overall performance of a coating. Without an adequate anchoring to the wood, the coating will peel off prematurely and, thus, affect the lifetime of the substrate. In this article, the impact of the type of coating used, the wood species, and preweathering of the wood on adhesion are disclosed. In addition, the effect of weathering on the wood-coating system as a whole is looked at as well. The adhesion measurements were obtained with a mechanical torque device developed at VTT in Finland. Lin et constituantsLe lin cultivé (Linum usitatissimum) est une plante annuelle de la famille des Linaceae cultivée principalement pour ses fibres, mais aussi pour ses graines oléagineuses. Les fibres du lin permettent de faire des cordes, du tissu (lin textile pour ses qualités anallergiques, isolantes et thermorégulateurs), ou plus récemment des charges isolantes pour des matériaux de construction. Les graines sont utilisées pour produire de l'huile de lin pour l'industrie de l'encre et de la peinture, pour la consommation humaine et animale, à cause de sa richesse en oméga 3.
Le lin est une des rares fibres textiles végétales européennes. Elle a comme caractéristiques la légereté, la rigidité et la résistance et comme particularité d'être une fibre longue (plusieurs dizaines de centimètres), par rapport aux fibres courtes (coton, chanvre) ou moyennes (laine).
Matériaux -- ImprégnationIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In applications as composites flax fibers offer several advantages over man-made fibers due to their renewable origin, low production energy requirements, biodegradability and thermal recyclability by combustion. Particularly attracting in the low density of flax fibers that lead to high specific mechanical properties. Flax fibers are considered having the best potential, due to their good mechanical properties, for making stiff and lightweight composite structures compared to other natural fibers. In a composite the efficiency of the fiber reinforcement depends chiefly on the capacity to transfer the applied stress from matrix to the fibers. The very complicated properties of the interface of flax fibers still prevent from achieving this goal.
In the literature a range of chemical treatments and manipulations is presented which make use of natural fibers complicated and expensive. In this work flax fiber epoxy prepreg are presented which are based on unidirectional fibers and fabrics produced in an inline technology which makes economic affordable. This article also presents some mechanical, water absorption behavior and biological resistance data on composites made out of flax epoxy. Revêtements en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Several solvent- and water-borne exterior wood coatings were artificially weathered to study their performance behavior. Penetration and layer thickness were measured on unweathercd samples and compared to theoretical estimates by means of measured basic parameters of coating and substrate. Color, surface roughness, gloss, and adhesion were monitored during aging, and the latter two were also calculated and compared to their experimental values. Theoretical values of gloss, and especially those of adhesion, were less successful on an absolute scale, but were in accordance with practical values on a relative scale. The influence of solid content, drying speed, and viscosity on penetration depth manifested itself clearly both in theory and in practice. In general, solvent-borne coatings performed well, but some water-borne coatings also showed good performance. By measuring the characteristics of a coating as described in this article, it is possible to rank the coatings and follow their weatherability. Finally, calculation of theoretical values proved a promising method for initial screening purpose. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The European Biocidal Products Directive (BPD) challenges the (wood) coating manufacturers to produce coatings with reduced amounts of biocides or even avoid using biocides. Moreover, coatings should also comply with the European VOC Solvents Directive, forcing the industry to switch to low/non-VOC constituents. Given this legislation, an integrated view on the interaction of coating-substrate-environment is essential if the performance of future coatings should enhance or at leat remain comparable adequate. Research concerning fungal deterioration of wood coatings is exactly in the scope of such an approach. In this work a modified version of the European standard blue stain test for coatings (EN152) is presented which is further complemented with testing in a contrallable environment, the so-called Fungal Control Unit (FCU). This test setup combines the advantage of accelerated artificial wethering, biological deterioration and mimicry of the outdoor situation. Both additional tests give complementary information on fungal susceptibility linkin them with outdoor infestation. Samples are analysed in 3D to acquire in-depth knowledge on fungal growth. In addition, 3D/4D X-ray sub-micron tomography and accompanying image processing is illustrated as a powerful non-invasive technique for coating research, visualizing at the same time coating, wood and fungus and linking their characteristics. Ultimately, combining fungal growth data with physicochemical information of the coating (film formation, UV degradation...) and wood (water absorption, nutrient content...) should lead to cyberfungal deterioration modelling in 4D supporting manufacturers in the development of the innovative 'green' coating.
