The speed of moving a composite part from concept to fabrication is a critical requirement of commercial composites design and manufacturing. Rapid prototyping (RPT) techniques such as selective laser sintering (SLS) can be used to produce parts for design assessment and evaluation from resin powders, and tooling forms from resin-coated stainless steel powders with subsequent bronze-infusion post-processing. Rapid tooling (RT) techniques, which have been used successfully in injection molding, can also be used to reduce tooling fabrication times and pultruded part development from months to days. Furthermore, rapid tooling techniques permit the construction of complex preform and die cross-sections which may be used to pultrude interlocking, fastenerless joint designs, for example. The advancement of snap joining from pultrusions accelerated through SLS and similar RPT and RT techniques presents greater strategic and cost effective opportunities for the development future constant cross section structural civilian and military systems (e.g. ISO marine compatible tactical shelters, Naval deck house structures, vehicle components). |
