Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Multi-functional sandwich composites are proposed to integrate the previously separate objectives of radiation shielding, structural integrity, damage tolerance, thermal insulation, and debris/micrometeoroid shielding into a viable structure design. Effective radiation shielding is provided through the selection of hydrogen-rich polymeric materials for the primary sandwich composite structure. using facesheet and core materials selected based on radiation shielding simulation, prototype sandwich configuration were manufactured that featured transverse reinforcements for damage tolerance and an internal Surlyn self-healing membrane layer. Flatwise tensile and core shear testing were performed to assess material compatibility between the facesheet and core layers and to identify any manufacturing-related problems. Acceptable interlaminar strengths were obtained for all configurations investigated. The results from this initial assessment suggest that multi-functional sandwich composite configurations may be used to maximize the efficiency of advanced material usage in future structural spacecraft applications.
