Résumé : |
Luminescence can be defined as it is radiation emitted by molecule or atom on return to the ground state from the excited state after initial absorption of energy. Phosphorescent are type of photoluminescence which involves absorption of energy and excitation of atom to higher energy level followed by electromagnetic radiation (return to ground state). The difference between fluorescence and phosphorescence is in the emission time. As a rule of thumb, if emission stops after the excitation source has been removed, then the resulting luminance is called fluorescence; if emission continues (so called "afterglow") then it is called phosphorescence. Common pigments used in phosphorescent materials include zinc sulfide and strontium aluminate. The glow is due to the unique properties of crystalline zinc sulfide. Copper is added to the zinc sulfide as an activator. It gies dark green colour in dark. Another class of phosphorescent pigments are based on Strontium aluminate. These are light green colour phosphorescent pigment in dark. Calcium sulphide (CaS) gives dark red colour night colour night glow in dark. A new class of phosphorescent pigments based on rare earth alkali earth metals also now commercially available. These pigments at equal loading had 10 times the afterglow and 10 times the brightness of classical phosphorescent pigments. These rare earth alkaline earth metal pigments were also manufactured in a blue green (aqua) and violet afterglow colours. Phosphorescent pigments used in various applications such as plastics, paints, Inks etc. |
