This weaving method, in conjunction with the continuous nature of the fiber and the 3-D architecture, limits the use of these preforms in complex geometries. Stretch Broken Carbon Fiber (SBCF) eliminates the continuous fiber restrain without reducing the effective properties of the fiber bundle while skillful architecture design opens up new applications. Albany Engineered Composites (AEC), in conjunction with team members, utilized a building block approach to define fiber architectures that enhanced the formability of preforms. One such architecture was incorporated into a fiber preform known as a π clip. This preform shall be used as the flange of a demonstration component, representative of an internal structural member.
